Tire in the Grandstands

Does any remember the year that someone lost a tire and wheel and another car hit it sending it into the north end grandstands, fatally injuring a spectator? My Father in Law, at the time, was a Deputy Coroner in Marion County. There were two Deputy Coroners on 24 hour duty daily at the time. On Race Day one was assigned to the Track while the other covered the rest of the county. We had a cookout that day at our house, kind of a gathering to listen to the 500 since it isn't shown live. My Father in Law was coming over once the race was over. We listened to the race but didn't seem to pick up anything unsual about this tire and wheel going into the stands. The race ended, but my Father in Law did not show up for quite a while. Suddenly the telephone rang and it was him calling saying he was at the hospital and that there had been a fatality at the track. We were kind of surprised to hear this. Later I thought that because of my Father in Laws job we had learned informaton that the general public did not know, and also that my Brother in Law who was a Yellow Shirt at the North end of the Speedway helped in recovering the actual tire and wheel that caused the incident.. Does anyone have anything that they can add to this event?
