Yeah, that was just a natural, especially with that slow, easy-going personality of his.

There was a time when I thought Randy Travis & Lil Al looked a lot alike.

My guess, Bill Alsup was a ride buyer with AB Dick $$$$$$$$$$$$$

Alsup was disqualiified from the I500 in 1979 when he qualified with same engine used earlier by Bobby Unser at Team Penske

Was Dick Ferguson disqualified that same year for a similar infraction?

I believe there were four Lotus 64s built; Mario destroyed his and the other three were hidden in the US for awhile from Granatelli and STP (who were trying to take them from Lotus in a sponsorship dispute). The survivors finally made their way back to England where Chapman had them crated and stored for years. I could be wrong but it's possible that they never saw the light of day again until after Colin's death. The cars were fast but had some serious metallurgical flaws (as Mario found out) that weren't practical to fix and were never raced anywhere. Somewhere in the mid to late 1980s they were sold to various collectors. Someone here at TF may know more about these cars.

I've never heard this information before. Interesting stuff

    I'd love to hear more.

IMO this may be the best thread ever on TF.

I do have one request for those generous folks posting pictures. Whenever possible, can you please include driver/chassis/engine/year/track?

    It would be greatly appreciated!

I also remember them being sold off somewhere in the '80. In one of my books about Lotus (I've been trying to find it since the picture post). Chapman told his people to "... bring them back here and I will personally put a hacksaw through them". Apparently Colin was none too impressed with his own creation at that point.

Found the book and quote. The book is "The Single Seat LOTUS Formula 1 & Indy Cars" by Doug Nye.

On page 134 Chapman told Andrew Ferguson "Andrew, bring the cars back to Hethel, where I will personally put a hacksaw through them, I will personally dig a hole, and I will personally bury them"

According to this book a London dealer (Rob Lamplough) made an agreement to purchase the remaining cars in the early 70's but Chapman vetoed the price. The matter ended up in court with the final outcome going against Lotus.

After this point I know nothing more about them.

Knew I had a pic of this somewhere. This is the AB Dick Penske car at MIS in Sept of 1980. I THINK it was the first race for this sponsorship, could be wrong on that though. Do remember Mario driving and winning the race. His first victory in some time. The pic isn't great by any means but....

This photo must have been taken at the August fair race. Foyt crashed in practice for the Rex Mays race and was burned just a week or so after climbing the fence at Indianapolis.
