Las Vegas entry list, Indycar rulebook, Randy Bernard, Safety issues

34 cars are entered for the season-ending race at Las Vegas next weekend.

Indycar rulebook specifically states that only 28 cars shall be allowed to race.

Randy Bernard has reportedly said that all 34 will be allowed to run at Vegas.

The 28 car rule was implemented for safety reasons. Too often this season safety took a back seat to "putting on a good show" - green flagging a wet oval at NH, not throwing a caution when Race Control knew there was a safety vehicle headed toward the field in Baltimore. Now Randy Bernard has completely thrown out the rulebook and deliberately created unsafe conditions for all drivers and crew members before the race has even begun.

Seriously, Randy? Nowhere in the rulebook does it give you or anyone else the authority to endanger the men and women who work the stage for your racing series. What do you hope to gain by this blatant disregard for the rules?

How is having 28 cars safer than 34? Unless you can prove to me that only having 28 cars is safer, you don't have a point.

This is the last race for these cars, do you seriously want to turn away anyone in a series that needs all the attention it can get? This last race is going to be exciting and anything can happen.

It's just 33 + 1...with possibly bigger pit boxes than Mid-Ohio (it can only take 26 cars).

(also two of the pit road accidents at KY happened under green flag stops with very few cars on pit road and one was a freak clutch issue with Porkchop)

I wish they'd just start Franchitti, Power and Wheldon and send the other 31 home.

You heard it here first: I predict there will be a crash at Las Vegas.

It shouldn't because it is a stupid rule. If they went and ran Road Atlanta or Sebring or Circuit de la Sarthe should they only start 28? Nevermind that they can pit about 60 at those tracks....... but hey, there is a stupid umbrella rule on the books that should really be made on a track by track basis...........

What's the title of Chris Economaki's book? "Let 'em All Go!!"

If ur gonna be a stickler for every rule, then here in Indiana:

-Anyone 14 or older who profanely curses, damns or swears by the name of God, Jesus Christ or the Holy Ghost, shall be fined one to three dollars for each offense, with a maximum fine of ten dollars per day.

-A three dollar fine per pack will be imposed on anyone playing cards in Indiana under the Act for the Prevention of Gaming.

-The value of Pi is 3.

-A person must get a referral from a licensed physician if he or she wishes to see a hypnotist unless the desired procedure is to quit smoking or lose weight.

-Baths may not be taken between the months of October and March.

    -Oral sex is illegal.

-A man over the age of 18 may be arrested for statutory rape if the passenger in his car is not wearing her socks and shoes, and is under the age of 17.

-It is against the law to pass a horse on the street.

-It is illegal for a liquor store to sell cold soft drinks. Liquor stores may not sell milk.

    And the list goes on...

Point is: There's dumb rules/laws every where... get over it

I don't believe you Gack. You want to see Ed Carpenter coming off a win on a 1.5er with the another great show.

Penelope- We've struggle for years with car counts and you've got to post that? Come on.

No umbrella, the rule specifically states the number of cars allowed for each Track the series competes on. The written rule say 28 for this track.

yep, I've read the rulebook. It still doesn't make your comment or the rule valid.

You win. I guess the "Rulebook" should be entitled "Guidelines That are Changeable by Official Whim".

Good to know that the safety of the people on the front lines is secondary to the show. Sleep well, Randy.

You still haven't answered the question, why are 28 cars safer than 34?

If we want to talk about rules, let's actually look at the rulebook, shall we....

    VIII. QUALIFICATIONS
    8.1 All Events
    E. Starting Field –
    (5) The starting fields for each Race shall be a maximum of 28 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals), except as follows:
    (a) Brazil – 26 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals)
    (b) Indianapolis 500 Mile Race – 33 Cars (no provisionals)
    (c) Toronto – 27 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals)
    (d) Mid Ohio – 27 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals)
    (e) Motegi – 26 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals)
    (f) Baltimore – 26 Cars (which includes 2 provisionals)

Tracks a & c-f tracks listed are due to pit stall limitations..Indy of course is listed because of 33.

However, there is allowance for changes during the season:

    I. GENERAL
    1.1 Governance
    B. INDYCAR Authority
    (2) Officials reserve the right to revise the Rules at any time, including without limitation during an Event. Notices, bulletins, supplementary rules, regulations and penalties are effective on the date and time issued, regardless of the date and time when a Member receives actual notice.

It's not hard to make the assumption that INDYCAR issued a bulletin at some point, which amended rule VII, B.1, E...adding Las Vegas to the list of exceptions. Note that these rules were published I think before Las Vegas was officially added to the schedule. It is not unusual for memos and bulletins to be issued during the season.
