    Cincinnati Reds 2012

Opening Day 2012. Of course after a March with several 80 degree days the best we will do for the next week is mid 60s.

    Reds Additions:

    Mat Latos
    Sean Marshall
    Ryan Madson
    Ryan Ludwick

    Reds Subtractions:

    Edinson Volquez
    Travis Wood
    Juan Francisco
    Yonder Alonzo
    Francisco Cordero
    Ramón Hernández

The Good: Joey Votto will be a Cincinnati Red for a long time. SS Zack Cozart and 3B Scott Rolen are healthy.

The Bad: Closer Ryan Madsen will miss the 2012 season due to injury. Young Sean Marshall is penciled in to be the closer. Mat Latos is nursing an injury.

Ugghh... and away we go, another 7 futile months of being a Reds fan.

But, as usual... I'm ready for it!

Lots of buzz around the Reds.

Over half the ESPN "experts" have picked them to win the division. Yeah, I know that hype doesn't mean anything. But there are reasons to be optimistic.

Just -- whatever happens -- please don't let the Cardinals win the division.

    Cueto-Chapman-Marshall were awesome. 4 - 0 win. 161 more wins to go.

I can't believe that the Cubs gave up on Sean Marshall and kept Wood and Marmol!

Not sure that Epstein "gave up" on Sean Marshall. He would have been eligible for free agency after 2012 (Reds signed him to a 3 year extension thru 2015) and the Cubs wanted to get younger and cut the payroll. They seemed to be high on LHP Travis Wood who they collected along with OF Dave Sappelt and INF Ronald Torreyes. I always expected way more from Wood than we got. I believe all three of the Cubs end of the trade were sent out.

You are correct, all in the minors!
Oh well, good luck to the Reds!

Entertaining way to steal a series win from the Marlins today.

Reds agree to a five-year contract extension with Brandon Phillips.

Eight hits by the Reds in four innings today, at least.

But only one run to show for it. The LOB bug has carried over from last year...

    They gutted one out today.

It would be stupid to say this was a must-win game this early in the season...

...but, it was a must-win game.

I'm sure CairO enjoyed watching it from the bench...

Nothing like losing a game on a wild pitch.

Memo to NL Central - the Cardinals are going to be very good. They are hitting everything except the lottery and starting pitching has been best in MLB despite Wainwright struggling in his 2 starts and Carpenter hurt. They have a great combination of talented veterans and impressive young player.

I don't hate the Reds by any means but they have looked absolutely awful in the 5 games against the Cards thus far. Really thought Cincy would was going to have a 3 or 4 year playoff run based on the talent they had a few years ago. From an outsider viewpoint, I don't think Dusty Baker is the answer at Manager.

Is it personnel, managing, or are they just in a massive collective slump. They seemingly have a fairly talented lineup and pitching staff. Not sure who the pitching and hitting coaches are, but something clearly isn't working with their approach.

They can't hit right now. Most of the starting pitching and some of the bullpen are excellent.

From what I have read, a lot of fans in Cincy hate Baker, but aside from some questionable bullpen moves, I don't think he's the crux of the problem.

And, as usual, the Reds salvage a series by taking the getaway-day game.

Now they head to Chicago, where the Cubs are suffering through a five-game losing streak. You would certainly hope that the Reds could take at least two. You know they'll at least win on Sunday ()

BTW, all five wins this season have come in day games. Coincidentally, all three games in Chicago will start in the afternoon.

The Reds are 9999-9710 in their history heading into today's game in Chicago.

Three innings in Chicago: five fielding errors.

Six runs scored, only three earned.

    Goodness gracious.

The Reds had no business beating the Cubs today, down 3-0 in the ninth and having been thoroughly dominated by Ryan Dempster.

But if you put Carlos Marmoset on the mound, anything can happen...
