Tornado striking west of OKC. TWC chaser crew blown off the road.

Storm now 20 miles west. Large multi vortice tornado with 1 mile wide damage path. Weather Channel chaser and meteorologist Mike Bettis was in their chase van attempting to out run the storm and their van got blown 200 yards off the highway and into a field. Vehicle totaled, minor injuries, air bags in van deployed.

    Crazy.

See? God hates TWC giving winter storms names too! (<-JOKE. If you don't like it, just move along. )

I believe this the guy who was talking to Brian Williams on NBC News. He was somewhere west of OKC.

This is not good. They released employees through OKC this afternoon because of the emergency, which immediately caused a massive traffic jam. Lots of people still sitting in traffic all over the place with multiple big tornados rolling around the area. Son of a *****.

Storm chasers have been blown off the road before. My mom was born and raised in a small town near Abilene, Texas (actor Bill Paxton has a ranch near Abilene) and she and her family use to always rely on their storm cellar because of the tornadoes. This area where she grew up at was part of 'Tornado Alley.' She said the most terrifying part of tornadoes was when they'd hit at night.

Moore, OK, mayor being told to seek shelter.

Says a Chick-Fil-A has already been hit.

Says there are confirmed fatalities already.

    Hope he's wrong.

    Be safe, man.

At Xfinity's invitation, I had CNN live-streaming on my computer for about ten minutes. They had the governor of Oklahoma on. She advised everyone watching CNN in the OKC area to listen to the radio for the latest information.

    Yes. I'm serious.

All of the other stuff in this thread was not mentioned the entire time I had them on. At points the screen crawl was directly contradicting what was being said on the air.

Storm heading in from across the lake and fun to watch here. Greenish-yellow tint in the air.
Not so much for the fine folks elsewhere.
    Be safe!

The animated-radar seems to indicate that they are tracking towards Indy.
My first Indy 500 was 1973, haven't missed one since 1981. To date I have attended 37 Indy 500's, and well over 100 other IndyCar races (CART & IRL).

I have a feeling that the NWS and the media will be quickly retracting their advice about trying to outrun the storm by car.

Large bow echo roughly at Effingham Il, I 70 and 57 heading east at 70 mph. If it holds together it's probably 1 1/2 to 2 hours away from you. Worst of the circulation right now has been tracking just north of I-70.

    They weren't driving into it.

According to Bettis (who's vehicle got tossed into a field) and a couple other chasers that also got hit and received damage to their vehicles, they were watching the multi vortex tornado, (the one that CNN was showing for quite awhile this evening) from a safe distance when that twister pulled up into the clouds.... only to re-drop virtually on top of them. Apparently they had no escape route to get away as the new tornado was very close.

I'm talking about once the debris started crossing the road. The winds don't typically kill -- the debris in the wind kills.

    Yep.

Or as I've heard it worded before, "It's not THAT the wind blows, it's WHAT the wind blows."

Rumors. The ball game had been cancelled way before the storm hit.

The track of this tornado was barely a half mile north of the Good Friday EF-4 that hit the St Louis airport terminal a couple years ago. In fact, while the terminal is fine after this storm, there are some outbuildings damaged. The airport is closed until they can inspect the runways.

Watch the tornado's they were originally watching during the first part of the video. They're whipping wildly all over the place. They had a choice to go forward or reverse. They chose to go forward to get out of the way of the new tornado (according to one report, that road behind them was a traffic jam of chasers so going backwards may not have been an option). It would appear the tornado shifted path and wound up moving right on top of them. They're lucky their vehicle managed to stay on the road though it looks like at one point the car may have been leaning.
