He always had a lot of fun explaining flood plains to me.

We're a lot alike, for better and worse.

We were doing estate planning recently, and I was pleased to see some of his spreadsheets. Not quite as elaborate or visually stunning as mine, but I was still proud.

“All my young boys, stand up. The ladies, sit down,” he said. “But all my boys, stand up. We strong, right? We strong! We strong, right? All my boys, tell me one time: I can do anything I put my mind to. Now a lot of boys aren’t supposed to be soft-spoken. You know what I’m saying? One day y’all are going to have a very deep voice like this (in deep voice). One day, you’ll have a very, very deep voice.

“But the ladies, they’re supposed to be silent, polite, gentle. My men, my men (are) supposed to be strong. I want y’all to tell me what the third rule of life is: I can do anything I put my mind to. Scream it!”

Sounds like he's speaking to kids. Right or wrong, a lot of kids want to be like their "heroes" on the playing field. It's been that way for a long, long time.

For those in/near Indy, especially those with kids, the Scouting Combine is hosting a free fan experience at the convention center during the combine. Lots of activities geared toward kids, and you can also see some of the players in action.

Although tickets are free, you have to reserve a date and a time slot to get an entry QR code.

We're registered for Sunday. See you there.

You would think a 4-year player who was drafted in the first round wouldn't need to supplement his income. Then again you would think the same guy could handle a $15,500 bond.

He has made $6,767,002 the last 4 years.

That was the right move by the Vikings. $18 million was too much to pay a running back coming off a serious injury and a 2.8 yards per carry average over his last 9 games when healthy and now nearly 3 years older than when he did look normal. Running backs don't last forever and I suspect drop off faster than other positions.

Barring retirement/arrest/injury/etc, he will be, and should be, on an NFL roster next regular season. No way a QB who threw 16 TDs to 4 INTs with a passer rating over 90 last year is going to be shunned.

He's probably a third-tier starting QB, but still one of the best 32 in the NFL today.

4-5 NFL teams need a starting QB and he is probably the best option. Romo is better but hard to see him playing a full season.

Jets are releasing Brandon Marshall. He still has some left in the tank.

Scot McCloughan is no longer acting as Washington GM.

He's a very capable player personnel guy who was GM with the 49ers and helped build that team into a Super Bowl contender. They fired him over off the field issues and he went to Seattle and contributed heavily to their success. He's had well-documented problems with alcohol and that would appear to be a factor again. He has not been fired because if the Redskins can get him to quit, they save a ton of money.
