One sounds like a soundtrack for a cartoon and the other one is the Allman Brother's song that the only thing that was lacking from it was lyrics. There's so many things I always wanted to know about Jessica but never found out.

but most of all I can't believe either of these beat out Tequila or Wipe Out.

Yes. A baby at the time, just crawling. Supposedly the joyous riff and rhythm of the song was based on the happy feeling Dickie got just watching her crawling around on the floor and playing and giggling.

Jessica was also meant to be a tribute to the great guitarist Django Reinhardt, who had lost the use of several fingers on his left hand as a young man. The song is meant to be played with 2 fingers, just as Reinhardt would have had to have done. Jessica is a very difficult song to play as a result.

The song really wasn't that much of a hit when it was released in December 1973; only reaching #65 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It reached #29 on the Adult Contemporary chart, but became a staple of album rock stations in later years. It's safe to say that it's more popular now than when it debuted.

Green Onions fared much better on the charts, reaching #3 On the Hot 100 chart, and #1 on the R&B chart. It was unusual in that it went to #1 several times in about a 5-week period in 1962. Originally thought to be a drug song, Green Onions is actually a tribute to a cat and the way it strutted around.

Green Onions is widely considered on of the best soul songs ever, and ranked #181 according to Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Rock & Roll songs, the only instrumental on the list.

    Tough choice.

Original mix of Green Onions for early 60's radio (2:30) seems far too short today and in comparison to Jessica's 7:30, but the live performances went longer with more variations and solos off the main riff. 'Course, the same could be said of Jessica, a performance of which could easily span 20 minutes.

    e.g. 4 1/2

    5 1/2

I know other people nominated Green Onions, so it was a team effort.
