    Bloomington Pizza

    HELP!!!

We stay in Bloomington race weekend and our post race tradition is to order a Pizza or two and settle in at the hotel...to date EVERY pizza I've ever ordered in Bloomington has been sub-par to say the least.

If you've dined or spent much time in Bloomington, give me a recommendation for a good pizza!!

It's only been 35 years or so, but Mama Bear's used to be good.

I really liked Cafe Pizzeria's thin-crust pepperoni when I was at IU... about 35 years ago.
Not everyone shared that opinion. I remember some calling it "Cafe Diarrhea." Never experienced that. YMMV.

    Mother Bears.

Nick's is basic, but a cool place to hang.

On the square is The Tap. Very good pizza, more of the wood fired type made these days if that works for ya and a full menu for those in the group that may not want pizza.

Mother Bears is the best in Bloomington but to be honest it didn't have much competition 35 years ago... It was Mother Bears or Noble Romans and to be honest I always preferred Noble's Sicilian pizza over anything they served at Mother Bears.

However if I had one night to spend in Bloomington it would be no contest... I would wander over to the Trojan Horse for one of their Gyros with a side of their Onion Rings.

Or have they closed the Trojan Horse at some point in the last 35 years??

I live in the middle of the largest Greek-American population in the United States (Tarpon Springs Florida) and nobody here makes a better Gyros.

Somewhat OT, but it does involve pizza.

So after almost 25 years of driving by the place and saying, "One of these days we need to get a pizza from there", we called from Turn 3 Saturday as we were leaving the track and stopped in and picked up 2 pies from Pasquale's. Oh my!, why did I wait for 25 years. I thought they were both outstanding, something a little different in the sausage that really stood out. Crust was done just right for my tastes, and the sauce was perfect.

Good call. You would also approve of their Stromboli.

The Trojan Horse is always busy and doing well.
Like Frank, gyro and onion rings, almost every time we go to Bloomington and definitely every time after boating on Monroe and heading back to Indy. mrs goner insists.

Agree on Noble Roman's deep dish.

Used to be Noble Roman's near US 31 and Stop 11, Hanna and US 31, and Southport and Madison on the Southside. All gone now. Not sure why they failed but loved going there as a kid/teenager.

Another college memory: There was a Noble Roman's about twenty minutes walk from Wright Quad. I liked to go there on weeknights, when almost no one was there, and study for a couple hours. I'd order breadsticks and occasionally a Coke so they couldn't throw me out.

Hmmm. Don't get over there much when I'm in Indy. The Home Depot is about as far east on Southport that I get. But one shows up on Google maps.

Barely still open. Usually more employees than customers.

The first Noble Romans Craft Pizza/Pub opened up in Westfield near the intersection of 31 & SR 32 about 3 months ago. Lots of seating and a fully stocked bar with craft beer, spirits and TV's

Took a menu for the glove box of the truck, I believe this is going to become a tradition. I'm heading down tomorrow night and I just may drive over from Fishers and try one.

For the southsiders among us Pasquale's is owned by the same guy who owns Vito Provolone.

For the old Indy folks among us it is owned by the same guy who owned J. Pierpont's.

Mother Bears is the best. Miss that place. Would go there all the time after classes. Music school was right across which was perfect.

Didn't they try to make a chain out of Mother Bears? Is that still going on?
