NBC said orthopedic injuries so far

Broadcast announcers signed off with a note about "orthopedic injuries."

As long as they aren't neck/spine.

There is a long distance picture on the web of Wickens being loaded onto the helicopter and his right arm looks like it is being supported by a cardboard cast.

    From reddit:

"I just heard Robin Miller on the NBC radio channel, off the air.

2 broken legs, broken ankle, broken hand

    No spine or neck damage

I'm sorry I have no way to prove this. I don't think it will make the air because they don't have a source that they can use. I don't know how solid Robin's info is.

Probably true. I asked Jon and he said orthopedic. Gonna be a tough recovery.

    Thanks for this.

It's remarkable how drivers are recovering from injuries like these so I hope Hinch also finds the same luck as well.

I feel bad for Wickens probably because he'll miss the rest of the season but I hope he comes back stronger and more determined then ever in 2019.

Hopefully the no spine or neck damage report is accurate.

Prayers for Robert that his injuries aren't life altering. Good luck on your recovery.

Thank goodness because I feared the worst. In the final video aired (I think they waited to show it until AFTER the announcement was made that Robert was awake and alert), as his car came off the fence it looked like his head was slumped way forward each time the car pirouetted.

I got this in my email from IndyCar:

Medical update on Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens

LONG POND, Pennsylvania (Sunday, Aug. 19, 2018) -- Schmidt Peterson Motorsports driver Robert Wickens, involved in a crash on Lap 7 of the ABC Supply 500 at Pocono Raceway today, has been admitted to Lehigh Valley Hospital-Cedar Crest in Allentown, Pennsylvania, with orthopedic injuries. He is still being evaluated.
INDYCAR will provide medical updates as they become available.

Thank God he is okay. It reminded me of Kenny Brack's and Davey Hamilton's crashes years ago.

james said he had his hands up and off the wheel and debris came into the cockpit and lacerated the backs of both hands. No other injuries.
A good race driver, given adequate seat time, can drive any well prepared racecar on any track surface or configuration at competitive speeds. Remember, I said a GOOD race driver!!!

Hopefully any broken bones suffered are not serious breaks. I would never consider either Brack's or Hamilton's injuries as being ok.

    I noticed that too...

If Robin is correct, it would explain why it took so long to get him out of the car...

Maybe they will have a briefing Monday morning?

Based on the delay tonight I assume there is surgery going on and they want to have that completed before issuing a detailed status.

Lest we forget Briscoe's Chicagoland crash. I was there and it made me sick.

If breaks were severe enough to require surgery and hardware put in, I could see why they may wait and give a full update as to the severity and prognosis for recovery.

I think we all feared the worst given the impact with the fence. Wishing a speedy recovery to Robert.

Does Terry Trammell still travel with the safety team? Allentown might need him tonight.

I was at TMS for that race. I walked to my car pretty sure I'd seen a driver die. I was never so happy to be wrong as when TSO reported he was alive. Serious injuries for sure, but he lived to recover.

Thinking positively for Wickens. His driving this year has been a revelation.

Best thing is, he didn't get his head into fence. And I could see why Bourdais was upset, about that chickenwire they used to repair the fence.

I hope the safety team carries morphine. Broke one ankle badly sliding into second many moons ago. All I wanted was someone to grab a bat and put me out for a bit. Prayers for Mr. Wickens. Orthopedic injuries are the most painful, even for highly trained athletes.

Pretty much what A.J. said at Road America...hit me with a bat because it hurts so much...
