Looks like Long Beach has a new title sponsor

Honda seems set to sponsor the LBGP, according to Racer.

It's interesting that Robin's article says Honda will also be sponsor of "the new race at Laguna Seca," yet the race is listed on the Indycar.com schedule as the "Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey."

Edit: The Robin Miller article has been revised to remove reference to Laguna Seca.

I really hope they bring back the celebrity race, I attended the 2016 event and that was a lot of fun. I don't see it happening though. Glad we have a new sponsor for arguably the second most prestigious event on the calendar.

    Much sense it makes, yes!

Maybe they will bring the celebrity race back using Civic Type R's.

A door closes, a window opens. Thank you Honda.

Honestly I wasn't worried about them finding a sponsor for this. Its still a big well attended event. I'm worried about the future of Iowa and Pocono. Miller sounded a mild alarm for the latter in his mailbag this week.
I'd rather have 10% of the world interested in the ICS than 50% of US that NASCAR currently has

Those celebrity races were pretty cool. Did the celebrity race always have a professional driver typically starting at the back of the field ?

Yes, it was always celebrities up front, a few pro racers in the rear.

going a step further, they should bring back the S2000 just for this race ) (althought the Civic Type R will do just fine)

Sadly, I doubt the pro/celeb race will reappear.
OTOH, 300 hp with some of the celeb talent they had in the last few years could even more of a crash fest.

They would start a full 10 seconds behind the celebs.

This is great news! Honda is a great sponsor.

The Honda Indy Grand Prix of Long Beach has a great ring to it.

Did you know Toyota did the same type of race at Watkins Glen for the F1 races in the late 70's?

The Toyota sponsorship meant I bought TWO cars from a local dealer. Prior to that, I hadnít thought of buying a Toyota (was about two weeks away from buying a Mazda CX-5) but their display and being able to sit in their cars suckered me in. One week later my wife had a RAV4 after 4 months later I got a Scion TC.

That was a few years ago, and Iím due for a new car. I think that is how I will say thank you to Honda. (Plus, it was nice getting three day tickets for servicing your car at the dealer! Hoping Honda has the same deal)

I LOVE the Celebrity race! It seems like that race got a lot of celebrities into the sport as well. I own a former Long Beach Celebrity car, a 1982 Toyota Celica! I wish I could find out who drove it. It must have been in 4 Celebrity races from 82-85.

    30 seconds.

In more recent years, the pro drivers were coming from more diverse backgrounds--NASCAR, off-road, 2-wheel, drag racing. All good drivers, but not sedan street racing studs like Kendall, Boris, Willy T., Pruett, Fangio II, etc. in the old days. The celebs usually had no prayer of winning overall back then.

This is great! I am hoping its Honda. I just bought a new Acura and they sent a survey asking why I bought the car. I said because
Honda sponsors the Toronto Indy ( I live in Toronto). I love my new car and I love what Honda does for the Toronto race.

Nominally it was 30 seconds and often times ended up being more than that. The celebrities would be behind one pace car and the pros would be well back behind a second pace car.

One of my favorite memories of the pro/celebrity race (many years back and viewed from grandstand 18) was watching the first pace car pass by with the celebs bunched up behind. They rounded the hairpin and headed for the green flag as we waited for the pro group. After a bit of a wait they finally came into view as they rounded turn 9 with Dan Gurney and Willy T. Ribbs at the head of the pack; both of them right on the pace car's bumper. Ribbs finally had enough of it and shoved the pace car out of the way just before the hairpin. The crowd roared in approval as the pros took off.

If memory serves, Gurney went on to catch, and pass, all the celebs taking the overall win.

Don't expect the word "Indy" to be in there. If Honda does end up being the new title sponsor the event will be called "The Honda Grand Prix of Long Beach."

Should probably also expect the name "Acura" in the IMSA event title.
