Mike Hull on the latest MP Podcast said he likes what the new schedule was going to be.
* Said roughly 7 cars getting bumped
* Saturday sets top 9 and top 30
* Sunday everyone in the top 30 - 10 are locked in and run for grid spot
* top 9 also
* then they fill the final row with 1 shot qualifying with everyone else
* then an all skate practice for a little bit Sunday afternoon
Assumimg I heard it all correctly.

I'd like to see them ditch the "re-qualifying" requirement for 10-30 altogether.
If they want to redo 1st-9th for the Fast Nine Shootout, that's one thing, but re-qualifying 10th on back has always been wasteful.
The re-qualifying thing really hurt Rossi last year. He definitely had a car to win, but hard to do when you should've been in at worst row 5 but ended up in row 11.

Sunday should be a traditional bump day.
If we really have 40 entrants, this would seem to be a number that would justify a 2 week qualifying format. Could lock in the first half of the field the first weekend, leaving a traditional bump weekend on week 2

I hate the requalifying for 10 thru 30. Give the bump some drama. Give them a few hours on Sunday with unlimited attempts.
Zero need for two qualifying runs for 11th. If you really want 10 thru 30 on the track, allow them to take the best time across both days, but don't erase the Saturday time. But really, just lock in the fast 9, give everyone two days with the slowest bumped the rest of the way.
I don't like the Sunday after the fast 9. Instead of having one off runs for the bump portion have a few open hours where the unqualified cars each have 3 attempts, whenever nobody is in line to qualify, open it up for allskate practice. That way there still is the drama of cars jockeying for position in line as the gun nears and some real bumping
100% agreement with this! The drama of bumping with multiple attempts and the clock ticking down is what makes it so special. Just one attempt and no drama about getting out before the gun goes off would be a major let down. I also love the jockeying around of cars in the qualifying line as the car on the bubble has to decide to stay in line or get out, etc. I'm really hope they find a way to keep that. Seeing a car that just got bumped trying to bump their way back into the field is great. Giving everyone only one attempt eliminates all of that.

I know they want to have action involving the top cars across both days. But can't we just make this simple.
Saturday
First Day Time trials: 11am-6pm
Each car gets up to three attempts for the day.
Fast Nine are locked in at the end of the day
Everything from 10th on back is tentative
Sunday
Second Day time trials from 11am-4pm (+/-)
All cars from 10th on back can re-qualify or elect stand on their time from Saturday.
Each car gets up to three attempts for the day.
Bumping will naturally occur during this period; they keep going until the gun goes off at 4pm. 10th-33rd is set at 4pm (+/-)
One hour break for track inspection and for Fast Nine participants to line up and go through tech.
Fast nine Shootout from 5pm-6pm
Why can’t we just have Pole Day Saturday and bump day Sunday. Why does everything have to be so complicated?

This is closer to the way it used to be ans should be.
Bigger crowd is on Sunday by a long shot. The fast 9 on Sunday has brought that crowd in.

So if 4 cars on Sunday go faster than the locked in 30th place, the 33 fastest aren't starting... again.
The part of bumping that made it exciting was the going out, coming back in, getting back in line, trying again. They've completely ruined that.
I'm totally done with IMS and IndyCar except for the race.
With this 10th-33rd re-qualifying, one of these days we're going to have a really bad wreck on Sunday involving a car from 20th-something. A needless crash, wadding up a car trying to improve by a spot or two in the 20's. I thought when Bourdais had his terrible qualifying crash (which actually occurred on Saturday), the whole premise of forcing all drivers to hang it out there twice would face stiff objection and the teams would be the ones to push for change.Totally agree!

A long time ago I started to believe that the powers that be were absolutely trying to kill bumping. My thoughts were based on 500 one-off entries bumping out series regulars. If a series regular gets/got bumped from the 500 they don't get their share of the welfare money distributed by IndyCar (this may have changed, but there was a time you had to compete in all races to get the money). If they don't get the welfare money, the team may fold and then who will race on all the road courses ?
Last year I started to think about it again. We had the prospect of real bumping, and what did IndyCar do ? They cut out one day of practice. This sure as hell didn't help the 500 one-offs. But we ended up seeing Hinch get bumped, and right away people started floating rumors about letting him run anyway because of his sponsor.
And now we have enough cars to really bring back bumping and instead of restoring some tradition, we get a one chance shot on "bump" day ?
I wonder if they really only want 33 cars to ever show up.
