My 4 year old daughter watched Sprout.

I think its silly that she got fired.

The PBS Kids Sprout channel has said goodbye to the host of "The Good Night Show," Melanie Martinez, because of two questionable videos, both titled "Technical Virgin," she appeared in seven years ago.
The digital cable TV channel for preschoolers said on its Web site that Martinez told her bosses last week that the videos had become available on the Internet, and that they found it made her unsuitable for a bedtime show for preschoolers. The videos are 30-second skits about sexual acts and sex toys.
A spokeswoman said a new host for the show is expected to be named by late this year.

How many people knew who she was before this "scandal?" She'll be an overnight star. Be sure to check "Google Trends" next week to see if she show's up and what parts of the globe are searching for her the most.

I didn't know she worked for PBS, too.

This viewer found the skits from "The Technical Virgin" both entertaining and informative.

    I laughed. I cried. I learned.

    Those spoofs are considered porn?

No one involved with the story called it "porn." Even though the videos are obviously spoofs and there is no nudity (at least in the one I saw), the subject matter was inappropriate for the Sprout audience, and the show's producers did not want any kind of association with it. So that makes Martinez "unsuitable" to host the show.

I'd be interested to know how many 4 year olds PBS thinks have seen the videos.

The past videos sound like they could be a PBS show.

The thread title calls it porn and it seems a few others here think likewise. I think it's a bit of a stretch and an even bigger stretch to be fired over. JMO. Inappropriate for the Sprout audience? Can't argue with that. But I didn't realize it had been included as part of the show. If she had done these spoofs while also employed on this kids show, I could see it being a problem. But these were done years before. Exactly how long does she have to 'pay' for such a 'horrible' decision. Seems to me you can do a lot worse and still become President.

Wow, what a load off my mind! I sure wouldn't want any kids thinking about sex when they grow up. You know if you shield them from it now, they'll never know about it later.......

This is total crap. I feel bad for the girl. Now if it was Ginger Lynn Allen, I could understand it, but geez.

I thought it was tasteless and that PBS has every right to let her go. We're all responsible for the decisions we make--especially when we go public with them (i.e. making a stupid video).

And you thought your teachers were lying about your "permanent record." Reputations have meaning, choices have consequences.

Unfortunate, isn't it? It's too bad more voters don't give greater weight to character.

What's even worse is that the current system encourages those with character to stay away, ultimately leaving us with the choice between Tweedledumb and Tweedledumber.

This is veering dangerously close to a Politics thread.

Thankfully, I trusted the majority of my teachers. How serious of a consequence should making an SNL type commercial years before holding your current job really be? Explain to us how Pee Wee's Playhouse EVER became a children's show? It was based on a very non-child friendly version that started in his stand-up act. Don't remember too many screaming about it at the time.

Yes, reputations do have meanings. But, how far do people and organizations need to go. I was picked up for shop lifting when I was a minor. Does that give my current employer the right to fire me some 20 years later?

    Lemming51 has a point.

If I am an employer, I will look at a prospective employee's job history when deciding whether or not to hire them.

When I conduct job interviews for my current emloyer, I look at the applicant's resume, including their job history. If I don't like what I see, I probably won't grant them an interview.
No one is completely useless... you can always be a bad example.

Um, I think when I'm in this idiom, I sometimes get a bit, uh, sort of carried away.

I guess it depends on what role you will be playing in that organization. The host of a children's show on PBS is something that organization takes pretty seriously for a lot of good reasons.

Since this video is readily available to ANY PERSON IN AMERICA THAT CAN GET ONLINE, I can see why PBS would react the way they did.

There, I said it... wonder if that's the first time her gloriously giving name has been used at TF.

No, I did not know that! But I met Robin Williams, and he looks about 10 years older, than he really is. Now I know why!
