    David Coulthard to NASCAR?

"I would consider something like NASCAR," he told ESPN. "I don't think I would consider IRL.
"Generally, people in Formula Onehaven't really been that aware of NASCAR, and of what we have been aware of we've probably higher respect for NASCAR than what we have for the oval racing IRL.

Wow, you could have made the thread title
"Coulthard Doesn't know what Indy Means"

Tha was a pretty scathing indictment of the AOW series'.

I think it already happened on the NASCAR forum where this was posted a couple of days ago.
    It's a Hoosier thing, you wouldn't understand...

Or "No team in the IRL could possibly afford my stipend."

My first guess is this quote has more to do with money than anything else. Secondly, there are now more known drivers in Nascar.

But go on ahead David. Nascar can take only so much metro-ization before it is no longer a ******* favorite past time. Go on and bring the armegeddon.

    To paraphrase: I'm chicken.
Or to properly paraphrase: Formula 1 has no respect for the irl.

    ...David is proving his statement correct, as far as the;

"Generally, people in Formula One haven't really been that aware of NASCAR, and of what we have been aware of we've probably higher respect for NASCAR than what we have for the oval racing IRL."

...obviously he isn't aware that NASCAR has more than twice as many oval races per season as the ICS.
My first Indy 500 was 1973, haven't missed one since 1981. To date I have attended 35 Indy 500's, and probably 100 or so other IndyCar races (CART & IRL).

No mention of Champ Car by DC?

People in F1 respect NASCAR because of the $$$$, no other reason.

...there's been a couple cars go airborne and upside-down in F1 as well in recent years.

I think that this statement translates well. If IRL drivers were making NASCAR salaries, he's be interested. The only reasons these drivers want to go NASCAR is money first, safety second. I think it's hilarious that NASCAR's getting all these drivers now, it's well deserved.

We've also heard many of them say that they don't see the point in racing on ovals, foot to the floor turning left (Or right in Australia ). I'm not saying that perception is right or wrong, but everyone's entitled to their views.

I say that DC wants a high salary when he leaves F1. IndyCar can't give him it, while NASCAR might be able to. If he fails in NASCAR he can always blame it on the different style of racing (stockers/ovals). If he were to fail in Indy Car it would relate to closely to his previous open wheel experiense.

So over all I see F1 drivers wanting to extend their careers in NASCAR where they hope to make some decent cash.

Or, maybe the F1 community really does see NASCAR as a more viable destination (Absent an F1 gig) than ICS or CCWS. Just a thought.

From a group that likes to promote themselves as high tech and road racers, nope. NASCAR is neither. Money and career extension is my bet.

I suspect he is aware of the payscale however...

Once John Paul and Jack flame out, no NASCAR owners will be looking at F1 has-been's (unless they bring a really, really big check).
IRL 2009: "Cars you can't see, driven by drivers you have never heard of, on a network you don't get"

"I'd hire your grandmother, if she brought a budget"- Bankrupt Indy Car team owner Tyler Tadevic, to Curt Cavin in December, on the tough standards he looks for when "hiring" driver talent.

I don't have to, the league typically includes multiple shots of airborne cars in what little advertising they do.
They're the ones promoting it, not me.

...so by that then the lack of credibility or repsect given to the IndyCar Series by F1 drivers, or at least Couthard, is due to the payscale and not the politics, ownership or oval orientation?

That is a rather silly statment, considering Coulthard himself took flight this year after trying to make an ill-advised pass on Alexander Wurz at the Aussie GP...in an F1 car, not one of those "flawed" ICS cars...
