I know our family went to the first day of qualifications every year during the 1950s when I was a kid. I probably started going to the race on my own for sure at age 15 after moving to Speedway. That would have been 1959 and continued until 1968 when I entered the Navy and permanently moved away from Indiana. I picked it up again in 1997 and have a consecutive streak since. Here is proof positive of being there in 1960. I took these photos with a Kodak box camera.

1960 was my 2nd year in the snake pit. I was a junior in high school.
My friends and I were offered a seat on that scaffold and luckily we had enough sense to turn 'em down. We sat in the 2nd turn in our snake pit days, right up against the fence. The scaffold was on the north end in the 3rd turn.
    Have a very blessed day!

Although the series has largely lost me as a supporter, Indy is still a great place to see an openish-wheel race. So I'll be there for #26.

I remember hearing about it during the radio broadcast. Like it was yesterday. I was 5.

    Every race since then except:

1977 - For some reason I stayed with my grandparents that year and went to a family picnic back in NJ instead of the race. I do remember listening on the radio with my mom's uncle and loving AJ winning. I need to ask mom about why they left me home that year.

1986 - There scheduled race day but dad was scheduled to be flying somewhere when they ran the race the following Saturday so we didn't make it back.

1995 - Went to Charlotte on a VIP trip a friends company had setup.

1997 - Again there the scheduled race day but needed to back to PA for work and couldn't wait until Tuesday.

This year will be #38 for me, not bad for only 41 years on the planet. This year will be my older sons (age 8) forth straight and my younger one (age 5) will be attending his first.

    Is it May yet ?

Been a fan though since 1962 thanks to a transistor radio that I was first able to hear Sid Collins when I was 8 years old.
It's a 2.5 mile oval of asphalt-covered bricks, used just three times a year. Yet it hascome to be the worldwide symbol of auto racing. More than that, it is our city's beacon to the entire globe, the main reason everyone knows there is an Indianapolis somewhere in the vast interior of America.

I missed the '10 race because I was on a Rolex team racing at Lime Rock at the time.

1967 was my first 500 and the turbine captured the imagination of this nine year old kid. I have seen every 500 since! 45 in a row. God willing 2012 will be number 46.

I've been to every 500 since except 1974 and 1975. Mom went through 2004. Alzheimer's has prevented her attending the race since then, though I did take her to practice in 2005. Last year was the first May since 1968 she wasn't at the track. My goal is to make the 100th 500. And I'm feeling good about my chances as I just learned this week that I have no sign of cancer now--truly a Christmas miracle!

    Haven't been back since.

Was thinking of going back this year since I'll be in the area, but if the field is less than 33, well I won't support that.
But when a long train of abuses and usurpations, pursuing invariably the same Object evinces a design to reduce them under absolute Despotism, it is their right, it is their duty, to throw off such Government, and to provide new Guards for their future security
