cape canaveral to visit NASA

We will be in FL later this month for honeymoon. I'm thinking of maybe swinging up to cape canaveral. Is it a good place to go to visit? Is there much to see there? My wife loves space and I think visiting NASA would be great fun. Any advice?

I went to the Kennedy Space Center as a kid, maybe 30 years ago, and remember it being very very cool.

Its been a long time since I was there, but it was worth the trip. The rocket park at the visitors center is awesome, and getting to see a real Saturn V is an incredible experience, too.

They run two tours.. one focuses on the shuttle, the other on the Cape Canaveral/early history era. There is some overlap in the sites visited.

However, the last I heard, they have made it outrageously expensive to take the tours.

If you have never been there before, its probably worth the money... but be prepared for sticker shock.

I was there a year ago. It was cool. You have to go see the Saturn rocket in the Apollo exhibition. It will blow you away. Very Cool.

The Apollo Tour is now closed for good, but the new tour is still okay.

I'd also try for a private guided estuary tour by boat if you can find one. Neat stuff on the area.

Also, YOU HAVE TO EAT ROCK SHRIMP AT THE DIXIELAND CROSSROADS

Rock Shrimp are sweeter than lobster and yummier too. Get a sampler with sweet bay scallops, rock shrimps and maybe some Florida Red Shrimp if they are in season.

The ask for a togo bag of their awesome corn fritters to really make you miserable...


Anyone headed to the races later in the month, the is also one in Orlando at the big Mall with the Bass Pro Shops Outlet.

I have eaten there 3 times in the week plus vacation down there. each of the last two years. Plus another two times for the Bowl game last year.

And no I am not a paid hawker like RObin Miller is/was

Same, 1976. They had literally EVERYTHING open for touring that year. It was a blast.

Too bad you're not going a bit sooner. STS-123/Endeavour is scheduled to launch Tuesday. You might want to look up Patrick AFB/Cape Canaveral Air Force Station and see if there's an unmanned launch scheduled for whenever you're gonna go. (Kennedy Space Center is the northern half of the Cape, CCAFS/Patrick is the south half. CCAFS is where all NASA flights up through Apollo 7 were launched, and is now used for unmanned launches; in other words, all the Mercury and Gemini missions and the first manned Apollo mission launched from Cape Canaveral AFS. The Apollo 1 fire was also at CCAFS, Pad 34. Kennedy Space Center is the big NASA Apollo launch complex used from Apollo 8 through today for manned launches. In other words, all Saturn V launches, including all the lunar missions and Skylab's OWS launch, all Saturn IB/Apollo Skylab missions, ASTP, and all Shuttle missions launched from Kennedy Space Center.) Right after STS-123, for example, there is a Delta II launch scheduled for the 15th, a GPS satellite.
