    Homestead ratings...

I noticed this off to the side of the Coca-Cola annoucement:

Opening race posts highest ESPN2 rating
The season-opening race March 29 under the lights at Homestead-Miami Speedway received the highest national rating ever for an IndyCar Series race on ESPN2.

    Anyone know the numbers?

LOL! That could be a .5 rating on ESPN2 to be the highest ever.

AutoWeek was less bullish on the TV ratings. And their attendance estimate was only 20,000. We still have a long way to go.

For comparison, anybody know what that time slot on ESPN (NCAA women's bball) was rated?

    Autoracing1 says 0.8

    http://www.autoracing1.com/hotnews.asp

It looks like the merger of Champ Car and the IRL is beginning to get some positive results. ESPN2 earned its highest rating ever for an IndyCar Series race for coverage of Saturday night’s event from Homestead-Miami Speedway, the opening race of the 2008 season and the first event since the recent unification of American open wheel racing. The race also marked the debut of ESPN’s full-season coverage in high definition.

ESPN2's race averaged a 0.8 household coverage rating and 815,070 household impressions, making it ESPN2's highest rated IndyCar Series race ever and the most viewed IndyCar Series race on ESPN or ESPN2 in almost three years. The rating was up from the .7 for last year’s Homestead telecast, previously ESPN2’s highest rating ever for an IndyCar Series event.

So that confirms it was a .1 increase or roughly 14%. I'd say not bad but with sub 1 numbers bad and good are kinda relative especially when this set an ESPN and ESPN2 "record" for the last 3 seasons.

    Damn you Spongebob!

Ratings that low are pretty sucky but at least it's a step in the right direction. Can't expect much better on a Saturday night on Dos.

I would think that .1 is basically noise.

Doesn't Texas usually get better ratings than a 0.8 on ESPN?

Looks like the "pre-split" ratings on ESPN2 to me.

The ESPN2 ratings are usually in the .2 to .4 range.

As some said with ratings as low as they have been any higher number puts up a great percentage of increase but there won't be a rush of sponsors that saw .85. It's like batting averages the first week of the season just two hits makes a big leap that at season's end isn't a blip.

On his daily blog Cavin said he couldn't tell about the attendance then said 20,000. Brilliant! Terry Blount had a story and said 40,000, I saw 27,000 and some fan posting on the Indystar boards that isn't transitioning apparently who wasn't there but counted everyone on TV and said 10-12,000.

You want the attendance, state whatever number you want, even if no one agrees challenge them to prove otherwise.

    That's fantastic for ESPN2... was last year's 0.7 also ESPN2?

Edit: Last year's 0.7 was ESPN2. So a nice little bump... will be interesting to see network ratings when we get 'em. And the Indy 500 rating!

I am glad there are so many people here to explain to me how better TV ratings are bad.

    Thanks.

I agree. Up is up. That's a hundred and something thousand more households watching. Cool!

Now if those folks tell two folks, and THEY tell two folks...
and so on, and so on! Maybe they gain two or three tenths in St Pete on ESPN. Long Beach should jump from last year (which was down from prior years, IIRC), just based on the IndyCar fans alone, and by Kansas maybe we've got some momentum built up...

My prediction: A gain of 1.0 for Indy, weather permitting, from 2006 (the most recent, uninterrupted 500). That's over a million additional households.

A strong, but doable, goal... no?

I somewhat agree with everyone. When they start getting above 1.0 then all be happy. But like others have said, it was on ESPN2. The real test is after Indy, and see what the other races get on ABC. A channel I believe everyone gets.

Well our good friend and fellow poster has put together this amazing page loaded with data and info about the Indy 500:

    http://www.geocities.com/johnsonindy...500/imstv.html

Ratings are all over the place... they had sunk to pretty steady mid-4's pre-Danica, the big 6.5 with the Danica bump in 2005, 5.0 in 2006, then the rainy 2007 race...

It's really hard to predict. But if there's a lot of press pre-race and the storylines get out there, maybe pulling in a 6.0+ isn't out of the question. It'd be fantastic if it happened.

    Pffft!

Were you there that day? I suspect not!

It was 102 in the shade and most folks were under the stands or else lined up at the beer tents. Also, there were thousands of folks at the porta-potties at the time.

Come to think of it, since the shadows are from the right, this photo was obviously taken between 1st and second practice, Friday morning. So, nice try.........

    My opinion...

For the IRL, .8 on ESPN2 for a night race against the NCAA's is pretty good.

The benefit of not going head to head against NASCAR must be factored in, but overall, not bad.

We've been down in the .3 to .4's on Saturday night's on The Duece.

Doesn't compare to NASCAR, but at least a blip in the right direction.

ESPN2 was born in October of 1993.

I think like 31 people got it at the time! I know I didn't!

They did do that onboard-only simulcast of Nazareth in 1994, where the race was normal on ESPN and in-car only on the deuce.

How far ESPN2 has come. It's not long before they're going to need ESPN3.
