Thread: Miles Nelson

Miles was sure filled with life and joy... Thanks for posting those pics!

I'm sure Miles is looking down at all of us, crafting his next long-winded TF thread to set us all back on the straight and narrow when it comes to anything IndyCar related.

    Hey Miles:

Just wanted to let you know that that like usual I'll be staying at the "Nugget" next week. I just wanted to let you know that this trip ain't gonna be the same without seeing you. In your new capacity as an "overseer", any chance you can put the magic touch on my video poker machine?

In case anyone finds this post offensive, Miles set me up with "comps" at the Nugget in West Wendover where he worked as a Black Jack Dealer. This was after he let me spend a week sleeping on his couch for Bonneville Speedweeks in 2006 - one of the best times I've ever spent at a new venture. We had our differences, but there wasn't a single thing I wouldn't do for the man! (and there were many times I helped him out).

    I'll miss seeing you Mackie.

    Jim

No offence from here Jim. I realise what great friends you two were - you must have some stories to tell.

I feel sad that I will never get to meet Miles face to face ... well not in this life anyway. It amazes me that I can miss someone I never even met. I guess he was just that kind of guy.

I sure have missed Miles' "trip to see the grandchild and spring training" reports all this week.

Can't believe I let this anniversary slip by. I knew it was around this time - just after the 2008 500.

Still missing this guy - his great website, his interesting analysis, his passion for the sport and above all his friendship.

My thoughts are with his family at this time.

I always make it a point when I'm at C&B to stop by the "memory" board and say "hello" to those who have left us.
I bet they have a helluva view for the 500!

I still miss his insight, his humor, and the community he was able to create. It surely doesn't seem like two years.

Iceman - I think he'd be like a pig in mud at the moment with all the new chassis and engine debate. Imagine the pages he would have already churned out!

On my trips home from Indy, I still stop and stay at the Wendover Nugget where Miles used to work as a dealer. It's kind of like paying him a "visit". For years there was a large neon Cowboy out front of the Casino and I used to kid Miles that it was a statue of him. Several years ago, the city of West Wendover acquired it and erected it in the middle of the road at the city limits. Now when I see it, I like to think that is IS Miles waving goodbye as I leave town.

    RIP Miles.

Miles is smiling there because he liberated you from your money.

My best time with him was at Richmond a few years back.

Wanna know what's wrong with NASCAR? They've gone from Junior Johnson to Jimmie Johnson.

Wanna know what's wrong with IndyCar? It's gone from dirt ovals to street races.

I have been a racing fan all my 49 years, but I was only a pit reporter once in my life, and that was volunteering to cover the Ft Wayne Midget Races about 10 years back or so for Miles website. I had a digital camera, a computer, and somehow figured out how to email Miles the action that he posted. Seeing my hero Mel Kenyon qualify in the top 5 at the age of 70ish was worth the effort, Tony Stewart was there, and it was the first time I had been to Ft. Wayne since I was younger and going with my dad. Got to sit in turn one with Miles and Tom one year for the 500, a good time to be under cover as i believe it was Dario's first win? Just remember it raining that day.

My dad crewed for Mel Kenyon and several Hopkins drivers in the 70's, one of the many guys who volunteered in May to fill out the ranks. Between 58 and 2007, he did not miss a race. Age and a battle with dementia was affecting him, but 3 years ago I brought him down for qualifying, and we spend a half a day at Mel's place going thru the shop and the trophy room Mel's wife put together. March 6th dad passed away after 6 days in hospice. I have never sung Back Home Again in Indiana so many times in such a short period. His eyes were open, and I could tell by the sparkle in his eye he was appreciating the final reminders of the greatest time of each year of his life, that of May and that of the INdy 500.

I don't know how he did it but he pulled me out of school for 2 weeks every May and i had the run of the track from the time I was 6 years old. Different era, but with a stop watch, a speed conversion chart, and a little note pad to write down speeds and get autographs I was in heaven.

This will be my 42nd 500, only missed two since 69, one because my son was born a few days before the 93 race and my wife literally said she would kill me if I took off. It was worth missing that year, didn't have to witness Emmo in person refusing the milk "I have orange juice plantation....!" (yeah, I will get over that someday, maybe) because now my 19 year old son will be seeing his 14th straight race and is my offically 500 racing buddy. Will be tough walking the track next weekend being the first year without dad, plan on taking lots of pics of places that have a lot of memories and trying not to lose it too bad when Taps gets played. Hope Dad has a good seat with Miles for the race! Could it really be a perfect heaven without some kind of Indy 500? You can't tell me Vucky and Sachs and Clark are not at the very least racing around the gates with their wings on their back.

He loved playing catch with my son at C&B (before the sun went down).

4 years? Can't believe it's been that long.
