We have a 2lb, 5 month old pup that just cost us a lot more than we thought. We got her two months ago and has been amazingly healthy, until today.
I left for a conference at 10:30, she was fine. Wife got home early from work at 11:00, puppy was really, really sick. She was throwing up, pretty lethargic. So, the wife took her to an emergency clinic. They tested, and there were no diseases of any sort. They almost sent her home with fluids until they finally convinced Jennifer to get an x-ray. It turns out that she ate a "rock" (I'll get to that in a sec). $2,500 surgury or put her to sleep. We both are HUGE dog fans (we have two others), but with our incomes, that is a huge amount of change.
She had to make the decision since I was busy at the time. We bit the bullet and thought the surgery was worth it. Thankfully, she made it and is doing well...
It was a marble. It got stuck in her intestines and formed a gas buildup. We went to my parents house yesterday, but they don't recall having any marbles, and I know we don't so it's still a mystery. The big question I have is HOW did she swallow something that big? We are talking about something smaller than a chihuahua (she's actually a papillon).
She's fine, but we are now going to be very, very careful about what she's around from now on. If Jennifer came home at her regular time at 5:00, she would have been gone.
