look what i found in florida...

    ...a 10# (approx) snook

    on a fly rod

i had never done any saltwater fishing so i gave it a quick try one day last week

all fish were returned safely to the water to fight another day (and they were out of season anyway)

    it was great fun

Nice one. I'll bet it was a blast.

Sorta gives new meaning to a "tug at the end of the rod", eh?

Did you get into the backing?

    no.

i'd guesstimate that he had 3/4 of the line out. not sure how much line was on the reel because it was not my reel.

his "runs" were abated somewhat by some decent incoming surf rolls. i would let him run when the surf was rolling out .... then reel like hell while he was rolling back towards me in the "next wave".

all in all, i'd say it took me about 10, maybe 15 minutes to land the biggest one of the day. the other smaller snook i could pretty much reel in like a decent sized large mouth bass without using much of the drag on the reel.

but yeah, i found snook to be a decent fighting fish.

you messed up the pin stripe.

it gets all squiggly near the head

orvis reel (older model that i did not recognize)
    intermediate sink wf
fly was some type of a white/silvery minnow that a local guy tied

not sure on the tippet .... it was already rigged up (i did not take my gear on this trip, so i was using someone elses)

definitely not a world record, but i thought it was a nice fish for my first time after them. especially considering the relatively rough surf and milky water whilst attemtping to sight fish for them.

we ended up mostly just casting around rock beds or wherever we saw bait fish breaking the surface.

Congrats! I've never fly fished or surf fished, but they both look like fun.

Seeing that picture reminds me of a story that Zane Grey wrote called "The Bonefish Bridgade", about surf fisherman down in the Keys. It is a good book if you like outdoorsy things, called "The Best of Zane Grey, Outdoorsman."

    Nice job on a 6wt.

Did your fly look something like this?

I just picked one up last weekend a little bigger than that off the beach along with some nice pompano. Gulf Coast beaches are good right now for snook, pompano, tarpon and shark.

Enjoy and BTW, snook season opens Sept 1 and you can keep 1 fish per day between 28" and 33" in the Gulf.
