My dad, who will turn 70 this Spring, was at that show. He still has the ticket stub (worn as it is).

Why does 50 years ago sound like it was not that long ago?

The new Rolling Stone has a good read on this sad day is history.

I've been to the crash site a couple times. Last Wednesday night I attended the 50th anniv. (to the day) performance of them playing in Kenosha on The Winter Dance tour, the same building and all. J P Richardson's son does a good job on Chantilly Lace. Many people there were also at the Jan 21, 1959 gig. Kinda gave me chills. Made me a little sad too, because they (and me)are getting old now. More trivia: I have a cousin from Iowa who knows the family on who's farm they crashed. A guy I know in Wisconsin, his dad was the promoter for their gig in Eau Clair. I am in awe of anyone witha ticket stub from the Clear Lake performance.

I grew up in the 70's in Garner,Iowa which is 12 miles west of Clear Lake.

We all knew about this as soon as we were old enough.
I was in high school in 1979 when KZEV radio started the reunion concert.
I can't believe that was 30 years ago.
    I was only 15!
Went to a lot of shows at the Surf later on but did not understand the history then but do now!
I have been to the crash site a couple of times.
I happen to live now in Sylmar,Ca., which is about 5 miles from Pacoima where Ritchie Valens grew up.
    Kinda ironic in a way.

The Winter Dance Party is a good show! They played here in Indy on Jan. 17th, and my wife and I were there... They were all good, but Ray Anthony who does Richie Valens really blew us away....

I head to Arizona in April, I'll ask dad. From what I recall (it's been about 10 years since I've seen it), it's pretty generic looking.

BTW, my father was from Fort Dodge and Webster City, which isn't too far from Clear Lake. He's in Scottsdale, Ariz. now.

A bit too much detail in that Wikipedia article. I didn't need to read some of that.

Dang. I spent a whole week in Clear Lake/Mason City last year and never knew it was where that plane crashed.

I remember my brother telling me about it the next day or two after and he showed me the grainy photo of the wreckage from our local newspaper. My reaction was something like "Wow!" At 5 years old I had yet to grasp the concept of death.

At 5 years old each of them had at least a song I liked. I thought LaBamba was a really neat song even though I had no idea what it was about. Liked Chantilly Lace because it was a novelty and because JP was kinda silly. Liked Peggy Sue because of the singing and drumming. Still like the songs very much to this day.
