A couple mid 80s ticket stubs. Funny thing is, I didnt attend either one of these races
I bought a couple Indy 500 programs at a motorsports show in PA a few years ago, got home and was looking thru one of the programs and these two stubs fell out.

Amazing I have a shot of Ol' Rube. He only lasted 7 laps.
And here's the reason the race wasn't so boring. Gordy coasting in with "ignition" failure after just 11 laps.

I've got this same brochure from 1971. Got it at the old museum outside turn one. I've also got the speed chart with several autographs, including Peter Revson.Dont know where, when or how I got it, but I got it. This is the cover of a small 6 page brochure I own from IMS. Inside is an article telling about the history of the track and the two middle pages show all the winners of the race

Yeah no kidding, that thing got tore to hell!
I was there in the turn 2 infield that day and thought that damn guardrail had sheered off part of AJ. (I was also there to see Merle Bettenhausens' crash).

I remember reading that during the pit fire AJ switched uniforms - went to one with fewer layers due to the heat of the day - and that switch may have prevented his arm from being torn off (ie, the thinner uniform gave/tore easier than the thicker one would have). Don't know how true this is, but I suppose it's plausible.
Geeezz,the 1981 Michigan 500 gets more interesting every day. it might of helped tremendously, but interetsing that you saw that.
I dont recal a championship race that had more twist, turns, and scary drama, than that day.
And it lasted a week! Remember it was scheduled to be run the week before but got rained out. You're right, that 1st 500 miler at Michigan was wierd.
--> 37 cars started with little ole' Phil Caliva starting 37th to finish 8th.
I'll never forget him chugging along, lol. The little engine that could!
--> Only 10 cars finished.
--> Left the track not knowing if Pancho or Tony B. won the race.
--> One of the last times I remember watching Salt Walther in person.
He drove a Bignotti-Cotter #21 and finished 32nd I believe?
--> Of course, the Herm Johnson pit inferno.
--> Foyt's grinding crash.
--> It was damn near dark when the race ended.
Definately a race I'll never forget!

p.s. All those years of crazy races and wild crashes, I still can't believe a driver was never killed at Michigan. I think the fans in 1998 were the only fatalities.
Really? I was there and I never heard about the Tony B controversy until years later.

Apparently during one of the yellows, several people up and down pit road questioned timing/scoring. Particularly with regards to Tony Bettenhausen having pitted or not.
Many still believe to this day Tony was the beneficiary of the timing of one his stops, with regards to when the caution came out, essencially having a lap on the field. (Remember only 10 cars finished, so there wasn't much of a field to lap, lol). Scoring put him on the same lap as Pancho, putting Tony 2nd at the checkered.
Many conspirousy theorists believe they did finish on the same lap, only with Tony 1st, nearly a lap ahead of Pancho. Obviously we will never really know.
