Sneva....amazing what you find in these shots. I'm not positive (would have to see very big enlargement) but I'm pretty sure I'm the "yellow shirt" at the far left of this picture (second person from left) in front of gal in black uniform. I worked pit area from '94 to 2000.

    Wow!

Check the pitcrew... No fire suits, no helmets...
Thought that was all solved after the pit fire at Michigan back in '82?

I'm wondering if that's Curry behind the car, Wardrop behind the fuel rig, both in blue.

Tn, there was a guy at the museum last week who stood looking in the background of a similar photo, and pointed out himself and like ten of his friends.
That's pretty cool you found you too.

Me too. I remember seeing Pancho walk up the stairs to the top of the stands after the race. Official presentation, perhaps?

Might be Curry behind the car watching, but it's a TV crew next to the fuel tank. Guy on the left has a camera and the other has a microphone.

Wardrop was on Luyendyk's car that year.

I had forgotten about this paint job.

that color combo shouldnt work but I Love it!

    Is that a March?

That RR tire looks odd. Is that a paddock tire used only to move it around like the rain tires they use now?

I'll never forget him chugging along, lol. The little engine that could!

--> One of the last times I remember watching Salt Walther in person.
    He drove a Bignotti-Cotter #21 and finished 32nd I believe?

    --> Foyt's grinding crash.
--> It was damn near dark when the race ended.

Definately a race I'll never forget!
    David.
p.s. All those years of crazy races and wild crashes, I still can't believe a driver was never killed at Michigan. I think the fans in 1998 were the only fatalities.
Few more interesting facts about inaugural Michigan 500: It was the first live start-to-finish national telecast of an Indy Car 500-mile event carried by NBC and NBCs first try to use the "CART-CAM" - the camera was built inside the nose of Bill Alsup`s PC9B (check image on page 4, post #76). Unfortunately problems with the signal provided little usable footage.
At the end of the qualifying Roger Penske(owner of MIS) decided to add 4 more starters to the regular 33 car field and to stage a 10 lap consolation/qualifying race for DNQrs. 8 cars started.Fastest DNQrs Steve Chassey and Bill Tempero were guaranteed the 34th and 35th starting spots. Chassey won the race, Tempero pulled off after one lap. Harry MacDonald and Phil Caliva became the final starters. Jerry Sneva and Jim Buick collided. Does anybody knows who were the last 2 participants of that consi-race? Any images of these backmarkers i mentioned? Thanks to all posters. Superb thread.

If I recall correctly, that MIS race was televised and the commentators talked about the possible controversy over the air.

I would LOVE to get a copy of that broadcast! Does anyone have, or know anyone, who might have it? I'll pay shipping both ways obviously and also burn you a copy if you want.

    Ditto.

I remember seeing a picture in the paper of Jim Buick's crash. Correct me if I'm wrong but as far as I know, that was the last "consi" ever held for an IndyCar event.

The last consolation race i know was held at season opener Phoenix in 1982 (20 laps was planned, 4 starters), but ended after 5 laps when 3 of 4 starters were eliminated in a turn 1 crash (Ray Lipper lost control of his Eagle and crashed into the Phil Krueger`s PC5). Perhaps somebody knows who were the other starters?

"Your races" section. Somebody definitely have this race on DVD for trading but early CART races are usually in quite bad quality.

Pretty certain helmets were not worn by pit crews (other than fuelers) until after INDY in 1996. I recall a crewman being struck during the 500 that year....very serious head injuries.

A Complete and good quality 1981 Michigan 500 has not surfaced yet. Strange for such a great big event.

    mlv,

The '82 Phoenix opener was one of the only two CART races I ever worked at. I'll confess to being myopic and missing alot of what was going on around me, but I never knew the events you described took place.

Do you have photos? I was looking for more Garza car shots. Thanks!

    Andy

OM.....Nice photo of Steve Butler in the Stoops car. Unfortunately his only INDY appearance ended against the wall the with the remains of the car reading "oops". Does anyone happen to have a copy of THAT photo?

Thanks. And IIRC didn't he have two crashes that month? I'd like to see the "oops" photo also.

    Here's another one.....

A lonely practice day in 1984. Howdy Holmes leads Herm Johnson around the south end. This was back when you could sit right behind the wall. (remember those little boxes with the green folding chairs in them)? I literally had the camera sitting on the turn 2 wall.

I used to experiment with shutter speed, film speed, apertures, etc... to try to get the sense of speed. This shot may have gone overboard, lol.
