    Gary and Tony Bettenhausen 1986.

I found this photo and the photo of Leffler 44 (above) in one of my many photo boxes, but I don't remember taking them. Not sure who to credit them to.

Took these of Christian Fittipaldi at the Firebird test track in Arizona. I used to live about 5 miles away in Chandler, AZ.
I would go out there every Saturday and Sunday mornings, in the winter time, to watch testing of the new cars.

Its 1981, but great pic! I like the Pepsi Challenger Eagle helmet that he has! Very cool. He drove one of the coolest cars of 1981!

  5. #845
Any guesses? I remember this car, just wondering if anyone else does.
    Hint: 1984

Sorry about that, I must have mislabeled the back of the photo. Thanks for the correction and I loved that car (and helmet) also!

    Absolutely wonderful pic!

His future sucked, but at this point in his life he was one of those great racers.

For a few years there he was running NASCAR, Indy, and Can Am. Probably some other races I don't know about. Not too many drivers today would do that.

Wow - who owned this 81 Eagle in 1984? IIRC only Dale Coyne had an older Eagle in 1984 but it was 82 car, #45 and was painted green&white. Extremly rare image.

Did he have that helmet in NASCAR or was it a ChampCar special? Inspired by Lone Star JR?

Sorry to keep repeating myself, but thanks to John, David and everybody for this privilege of seeing your work.

RayC, thanks for the story about the Ligier.

It looks more like the confederate flag?

I agree, I love black and white photos. Sometimes they just seem so much more detailed and crisp.

    Curiosity here...

It is my understanding that USAC changed their rules regarding roll bar bracing after Art Pollard's fatal crash. After that, you couldn't run bracing from the roll bar to the engine. The bracing had to run somewhere else because it would be useless if the engine broke away from the tub. Assuming this to be the case, I'm a little surprised that the roll bar bracing on the Thermo King car had not been changed before 1975.

Anybody have any information about this?

Thanks, Calhoun. I'll write that on the back of the pic. Hope to scan some more photos tonight. I have no idea who some of them are, but I know the guys on this forum can help.
