This was the most dominating car that I have witnessed in the 26 Indy 500's I have attended. That car was on rails!

The Penske Panzers in 1994 were in the same league

Not a bad record for a car that only ran three times... That old 99 next to it ran forever!

Actually, the car ran at a few other tracks as well. Vukovich ran at Raleigh, North Carolina on pavement in the car in 1952 and finished last after the brakes went out. He also attempted to qualify the car on the dirt at Springfield that year as well but wasn't fast enough to make the field. And he also ran it in one of the invitational events at the Chrysler Proving Grounds where the car ran its fastest laps ever. I believe this was in either 1953 or 1954 and Vukovich turned 175+ MPH laps. Someone here will know for sure.

I'm on the road, so don't have my Wallen handy, but Mcgrath and Ruttman were faster in the 170's, Vuky high 160's, Bryan 164ish in his dirt car.

Thanks, Jim. And I want to say that George Connor was over 180 MPH in one of the Chrysler stock block Kurtis roadsters. Do you know anything about this?

This has been my son's favorite car in the museum since the first time he stepped foot inside at the age of 4. This was before he even knew the history behind it. We bought the #26 version from Carausel as a Christmas gift for him. He opened it last night and has spent most of the past 24 hours going over every detail. He even said it was a cooler gift than the PS3!!

    Guess I'm doing something right!

I've never heard of this event before. Can you provide more details?

Chrysler opened their new proving ground in 1954. To show it off they had a match "race" for McGrath, Vuky, Bryan and Ruttman.
The world's closed ourse record was 148 and change.
All raced their Indy roadsters except Bryan in the upright dirt car.
McGrath, using Nitro (as was his habit) ran fastest at just over 179.

Apparently it wasn't a sanctioned event because the closed course record was set later in 1957 at Monza, by Tony Bettenhausen in the Novi, at 177 and change.

It was that record, at Monza, that Bill France put $10,000.00 bounty on at Daytona. It was to cost one driver dearly.

Thanks Indyrjc.. I misremembered that. Just the THOUGHT of the little roadster on dirt creeps me out!

Just a brief note to publicly thank Calhoun for making the effort to look back through his archives, and sharing a photo I had been hoping to get my hands on. That was a stroke of luck for me and a generous gesture on your part, and I sincerely thank you for it!

According to this excerpt from Automobile Quarterly Sam Hanks went 182.554 MPH at the Chrysler track in the Firestone test car. This was a couple of weeks after the 1954 exhibition that you described. I was apparently mixed up in some of my earlier posts. It happens....

I have the Carousel #26 as well.
It's the favorite of one of my Grandsons.
