That's Gil de Ferran in the Pennzoil car. Fabi was in a red and white Forsythe-owned car that year.

You are correct. I misremembered when I glanced at the pic. I went back and edited the info. Thanks.

By the paint job this looks like Al Jr. in one of the Rahal Lola cars that Penske borrowed in an attempt to get qualified. The cars were running at qualifying speed when Rahal gave them to Penske. For some strange reason the Penske boys took them apart and put some of their own pieces and setups on the car. They could never get the car to handle after that and Al Jr. (and Emmo) ended up missing the show. This was the most disorganized that Penske ever was at Indy. While smaller teams with lessor equipment (like Tony Bettenhausen's who got Johansson in the show) went out in the waning hours of the last day of Time Trials and masterfully used the clock and the changing weather conditions to their advantage the Penske crew made every mistake possible. By the last hour both Al Jr. and Emmo weren't even very close. The Penske team had never had to qualify on the last day before and just plain didn't know how to play the game.

You're most welcome. Thanks for all the great pics so far (and everybody else too, for that matter).

The conspiracy theory is that Tony George made sure that Penske's popoff valves were not up to snuff. This was done because of the way Penske bent the rules in 1994 and totally dominated the race. Just a theory...

Except what Penske did in 1994 was entirely legal, so there wasn't any way to bend the rules.

The thing I remember most about the Penske 1995 episode was just watching them throughout the 2nd weekend. One of the Indy writers said 2nd weekend is more like a streetfight for those teams trying to make it. Roger had never had to go through that before. The whole team just looked a little lost, regardless of whatever may or may not have been happening with popoff valves, etc.

An informed source on Penske's 1995 travails

The importance of getting set-up right...
"An emphasis was placed on drivers with road racing backgrounds which meant drivers from open wheel, oval track racing were at a disadvantage. That led Tony George to create the IRL." -Indy Review 1996

They also tried out the Roberto Guerrero, Pagan backup....did the same thing with Penske parts on the Pagan car AND...neither Emmo or Little Al could come close to what was needed to get in the show.

A sidelight to all of this was an accident on the grounds. IIRC, a rental truck backed into one of the concession stands, doing major damage. What kind of rental truck was it? You guessed it.....Penske Truck Rental. It was that kind of year for Roger.

Crazy thing was, when I took the picture, it was like, yeah Little Al in a different paint scheme. That will be unique once they get qualified and repaint it in their Marlboro livery. Never even entered my mind that they would not get qualified.

Isn't this the Eagle that had been assigned to Michael Chandler, and Cogan replaced Chandler after Chandler had a career ending crash in T3 on fast Friday? If I remember correctly the car Chandler had been driving had a maroon paint scheme. What is Dubonnet? Wasn't that the sponsor on the ill fated Liger cars about this same point in time?

Dubonnet is a wine based apertif. On it's own it is very sweet. It's used as a component in a lot of mixed drinks.

Don't mean to hi-jack but in the song "Berlin" by Lou Reed, he sings,

    "In Berlin, by the wall
you were five foot ten inches tall
    It was very nice
    candlelight and Dubonnet on ice"

    and

    "In a small, small cafe
we could hear the guitars play
    It was very nice
    candlelight and Dubonnet on ice"

Also, Hexcel is a designer and manufacturer of honeycomb materials of aluminum early on, but now also fiber materials. I'm guessing that AAR might have used some in the aft bulkhead or somewhere in the nose of the car...

If I remember it, and I'm not sure of this, but at the time, Penske's sponsors were paying him 11 million dollars a year... per car run.

    That was a ton-O-money then.

Memory really doesn't serve me well, though.
