    About the tree...

My grandpa, Johnny Appleseed Bernstein, once told me he attended the 1912 Indianapolis 500 and sat in the very spot where that tree stood, until 1947.

If we can extrapolate the growth rate of a macintosh apple tree, and factor in the average temperature and humidity at Indianapolis from 1912 through 1947, we could calculate a trunk diameter and compare it to the one which is graphically represented. Then we could tell what year the picture was taken!!!

    Or, we could just look at it and say...cool old pic, thanks ;}

Michael, are you basing the choice of Louis Unser (instead of Billy Devore) as the driver based on the lack of a number? I guess that might make it early in the month and possibly more likely to have been on the track for just a Driver's Test. And just what were the details of the very brief Indianapolis career or Louis Unser? I've always been a little confused on that so anything you can add would be appreciated. Thanks....

So typical...sarcasm toward someone making a sincere effort to find the back story behind and offer additional information (like he did with the other photos). And in this case, when the comments were offered somewhat tongue in cheek no less (notice the ?).

Why does there seem to be so much hostility - ranging from slightly veiled to downright open - toward historians and researchers here?

And, on a forum with the exception of that, is a great place full of nice people.

And, yes, nice photos, thanks for posting them Ovalmeister

I don't think he meant any sarcasm in a negative way - Michael's analyses are just extraordinary to many of us... sort of like listening to Carl Sagan expounduing on the Milky Way or something

Thank goodness for the historians and the researchers and their efforts to save knowledge from history's heaps!

The guys at the IMS Photo Shop dated that to 1941.

Those are some great shots. You learn something everyday, I never knew Desire Wilson drove for the Machinists Union. Thanks!

    Thanks doitagain,

My imaginary forensics were intended as lighthearted humor, not sarcasm of the desire to find context for the photo. The fellowship in this room is exactly why I thought it would be accepted with a smile.

I apogize if anyone took offense, that was not the intent when I pulled that little ditty from the trunk. I am not a seedy character.

If people knew how much time I was devoting to solving puzzles as abstract, they would ridicule the investment. Try looking at 50 photos to determine where Helio's rear wishbone mount failed at Homestead, and you'll know I am as committed as the historians among us. I thank them for their efforts.

    To Mr. Ferner:

Es tut mir leid. Keine Offensive bestimmt sind.

    Back on point:

The 1924 Duesenberg in post #1857 has an enclosed extension on the nose: the 1925 Doozy in post #1871 lacks this feature.

It appears to me that the transverse bar is a "nerf" bar, also suitable for towing, in addition to serving as the forward mounting point for the front leaf spring eyes.

Perhaps that makes the 1924 Duesenberg the first IndyCar to have been fitted with a nose wing? Seriously, the fairing looks to me like an effort to streamline the underlying components, and may have produced a touch of negative lift. Just an observation, I'd be interested in your thoughts.

If Apple (no pun intended) ever makes a time machine, my first destination is the pit lane shot from 1940. That is unbelievable. I can smell it.

Andy It did occur to me that you offered this good naturedly, but considering some of the tone here at times, I assumed...and when one assumes...

Yes, that was exactly my way of thinking - I'm found out!

Sorry, can't help with the Lou Unser story at the mo. Just guessing, perhaps he couldn't find the speed needed?

As an aside, Mr. Bernstein, I took your post as the light hearted humour it obviously was supposed to be, AND with a smile!

No offense taken - even if the bablefish translation doesn't make much sense in German!

Yes, sorry about that: my German is a little...non-existant.

Anybody have a thought about the Duesenberg question?

And be careful ZOOM, I'm watching you!

I cant remember off hand why Des got the machinists ride for RA that year..I know they had Rick Meskiewitz ( sp) in the car and now that I'm thinking about it, maybe he dumped the car on friday during practice and had a concussion...
Im sure someone will remember for sure.

It's hard to imagine how much different things were with tires so narrow...

Schneider to Johnson: "I think my tires are going off".

Johnson to Schnieder: "Nah, it looks like they're all still there to me".

Don't take that to the bank yet, I 'think' that was the case.
