Why yes, another mistake on my part. Actually Lynn St.James took St.James as her last name because of the actress Jill St.James. Lynn liked it better than her own last name. Anyone know what Lynn changed her name from? I don't, but I remember her telling this story.

According to Wikipedia, Lyn (one N, not two) St. James was born Evelyn Gene Cornwall.

I'm guessing the name change was after she separated from her 1st husband. However, did she choose to name herself after Jill St. James or Susan St. James? I thought it was Susan St. James...

Uh Rick, she liked the name actress Susan St. James.

The Jill you're thinking of is probably Jill St. John aka Oppenheim.

I was raised in a little suburb of Chicago, 'bout 8000 people. We had a small Fire Department and my dad tought hydraulics for the engineers test for the city of Chicago Fire Dept. Any way, we knew all the guys on the Fire Department in town. They all knew I was a racing fan. The Chief eventually became the president of the national fire chiefs association. One of the perks was to be invited down to Indy to be one of the fire teams at the race and practise.

Our chief was Hermand Flohr. Since he was the president of the Fire Chiefs Asso. he got to pick the pit he worked in. He liked this little Itialian guy who was a rookie. Even got his pitchur took with the little feller. He gave me the picture....

Yup, that other guy is Parnelli......

    Marc,
In looking at the "83 photo of Lil Al at Road America, it reminds me that when I saw the '83 Mid Ohio race, the Unser Galles Eagle had an additional wing on the engine cowling similar to what the '70 McLarens had, but it was thinner and extended closer to the width of the car. Do you have a photo of this? Your photo on flicker crops the car just before the portion where the wing was mounted at Mid Ohio.

What was cool about this was that in qualifying some dude named Fabrizio or something like that ran Teo off the road so he jumps in his backup & wins the pole & then the race, Porsche's lone CART victory...

I looked into it a while back. Emerson had to make one final splash and go. They scheduled a timed stop for lap 194. Jack Arute was even standing in the pits with the stick they were going to use to tap the fuel man to disengage (like Johncock in '82). Of course showing good ole' Jack in the pits holding the stick they almost missed Fittipaldi crashing on the track seconds later.

Fate has a strange way of working out....Had Fittipaldi not tagged the wall, he may still have not won. Arie Luyendyk blew an engine a minute after Fittipaldi crashed, and the yellow would have come out anyway. With the pits closing for the yellow, and Al Jr. able to make up the lap before Emmo could duck into the pits for fuel, Al Jr. may have been able to pass Emmo while he was pitting. Or Al would have closed up right behind him. Or perhaps with the Luyendyk yellow Emmo would have then attempted to go the whole way without pitting...would he run out of fuel? We'll never know. Would Stan Fox's crash a few laps later bring out the caution again and Emmo win under yellow? Again, we'll never know.
