Refer back to that front row shot posted earlier...Russo crashes with somebody...note how long the grass is on raceday.
I guess this old guy didn't make the race!

Ignorant men marvel at extraordinary things. Intelligent men admire simple things.
Hal Cole in the Don Lee Alfa Romeo. Cole had a fuel leak and spun in front of Russo, on lap 16.

The picture you're looking at is the aftermath of Mauri Rose spinning and then hitting Russo's parked car.
Russo crashed on lap 16 and stopped against the outside wall, but back in '46 they would still (on occasion) leave cars on the track if they thought they were out of the way.... well, on lap 41 Mauri Rose spun and crashed into Russo's parked wreck....
Russo broke a leg and Rose, who had a much bigger hit, walked away, I believe.

Here's a couple I just scanned from the mid 50's:

Can you ID the cars?

Not really - I've been trying to for the past couple of hours.![]()
Here's some more. While trying to identify the two color pictures above, I discovered that I've been wrong about the year these were taken. I always thought these were from 1952 - they're actually from 1950 . (The rug-rat in one picture is me - attending my first 500)

I *think* they're from 1953. I blew up the second picture and it's the "Blakely Oil Special" and the name on the cockpit is Jim BryanOriginally Posted by DaveL
. In 1952, Bryan finished 6th driving for Peter Schmidt. In '53, he finished 14th., driving a Blakely Oil car (not this one however) for John McDaniel and started driving for Al Dean in 1954.
Actually, Russo crashed all by himself. The car was left on the track which was the custom then so long as it wasn't in the racing line. Some laps later Mauri Rose hit the wall and ended up next to Russo's car (he may have even hit it before he came to a stop). Rose had been leading earlier. I found out some years ago (from a friend of Rose's car owner) that Rose didn't get any sleep the night before the race due to an argument with his wife. The car owner blamed Mauri losing control of the car on this family issue.Originally Posted by cbreez99
BTW, the wrecked Rose car was just sold at an auction this (completely restored) year for $375K. Rose ran the car with a 270 Offy engine but the restored car was sold with a straight 6 Lencki engine which was in the car both before and after Rose drove it.

This car qualified with the help of nitrous. A bottle had actually been riveted inside the tub where it could not be found by any inspectors. The bottle had some kind of a pin held valve on it that could only be turned on one time. There was no way to put another bottle in short of taking the tub apart. Threshie got his car in the show. IIRC, Gary Bettenhausen also started an attempt in a sister car but lost a wheel while on his warmup laps. Since the bottle was then empty the car couldn't make another run.Originally Posted by Ovalmeister
I went back and looked at the '46 photos on the IMS website, and yes, the car in the picture is Rose's #8. There is a much better picture of the scene on the site.
According to the race report, Russo crashed on lap 16 and Rose crashed on lap 42. The picture shows the two cars in proximity to each other. That would mean that the Russo car WAS left in the middle of the track for 26 laps!![]()
Certainly Rose would not have crashed if the field was under the yellow! They must have been racing.
Can you imagin that happening today?
