It mentions Bob Harkey #79 had a pretty serious practice crash, broke several ribs, collarbone, leg, hand and wrist. I have no recollection of that crash or even what the car looked like.
Does anyone have any photos of that car, either the crash or pre-crash? I just can't place that car at all.
    Thanks,
    David.

A friend of mine emailed me this photo. I guess it was a pretty hard hit.
I don't want to turn this into a crash thread, there are enough of those already. Just a follow-up to an earlier post, if anyone was curious.
No idea who the photographer was.
    David.

1983....that got me to wondering about just how old Bob was at this time. IIRC, he drove roadsters at the speedway. He qualified Mel Kenyon's backup for the 1974 race, so this was 9 years later.

    A quick wikipedia search:

Bob Harkey (born June 23, 1930, Charlotte, North Carolina), is a former driver in the USAC Championship Car series. He raced in the 1963-1979 seasons, with 85 career starts, including the Indianapolis 500 in 1964, 1971 and 1973-1976. He finished in the top ten 23 times, with his best finish in 4th position in 1964 at Trenton.

Here's one of AJ at the IRP July 1970 race. Ran out of fuel with seven laps left, finished 12th. Led 14 laps.

I'd have to get the old yearbooks out to research, but I actually think that Bob had not fastened or tightened the seat belts prior to going out to practice.

Reminds me of Lee Shepard. I believe that he was not wearing a helmet when he crashed his Pro Stock car during testing...

He qualified and started Salt Walthers backup in 75 only to be replaced by Salt on lap 9 IIRC...

Ran into Harkey and Vukovich at the Gasoline Alley open house last summer. Both great guys to reminice with.

Harkey still calls Billy an old fossil.

Wasn't Harkey in the race where Sachs and McDonald were killed.
IIRC he was just behind the accident.

Yes, driving the Watson built, 1960 500 winner. The car had a larger tail put on for 1964 and it is in the Harkey driven livery that you see today at the vintage shows.

That kinda confirms the difference in two personalities (Mel and Salt). Mel didn't make the race in '74 and could have pulled Bob from the car to start for himself. Instead he worked on Bob's crew during the race when Bob ran to a top ten finish.

Watched Dan's son run in the Datona Prototypes yesterday. Not only does he LOOK like his dad, but he may even drive better!

Hello all, time to post some more. From here on out these will all be scanned slides from me. There may be some that look like almost exactly like some I have already posted. I have tried to screen for this but some may have slipped through.

I've heard the rumor about Lee Shepherd not having his belts tight on his last ride, I've never heard about the helmet. Any confirmation?

The story as told to me was Reher and Morrison had rented out the track for the day to work on the first 300' of their runs. Shepherd was doing first to second gear hops, analyze, change, quick hop, analyze, change. Probably not the scariest stuff. At the end of the session it appears he wanted to air it out some but never hooked up his belts. Problem at the top end and Lee's body didn't take the forces awarded to it.

This was told to me two days after his death by someone closer to drag racing than many. His quote "and for some nutball reason he didn't buckle his belts and......" has stuck in my head since.
