the rear view mirror to see over the wing and Foyt engine! Pocono 1973
standard mirror configuration on a Offy powered 1972 Eagle. Gordon Johncock's Indy winning car in 1973. Picture taken at Pocono waiting for the fog to lift so they could practice.
.....'Hey jkracing, 'Thanks for those! Any idea who the stooge is behind Johncock's car wearing the STP Jacket and the red pants???
That would be George Bignotti in the STP jacket and red pants.
Chief Mechanic George Bignotti. Not a bad picture for a 15 year old with a Kodak Instamatic. At the time I wanted to be a driver or a chief mechanic that's why he was in the picture.
A year or two later.
Thats Pocono tooOriginally Posted by jkracing
I dont know if you can do it now, but you used to be able to crawl under those stands and watch the cars fly by less than 30' away.
You could only see 2o' of the track from down there but its wonderful!
I would sneak under the garage fence at the drainage ditch when I was to young to get a pass. That's how I would get some good car pictures without a good lens.

A.J. Foyt at the fuel truck.
Jk.....thanks for posting these pics of Mel and Gordy's Eagles. They go a lot farther than me trying to 'splain why the mirrors were modified for the Foyt.Originally Posted by jkracing
Also, notice the different roll bar mounting points for the Offy and Foyt.

Hey, sorry for the little photo posting vacation, been working WAY too much lately!
Anyway, so my Dad and I are sitting inside turn 1 at Indy on a practice day in 1976. Eddie Miller comes crashing through the turn, hooks in the grass, and starts flipping towards us. He flipped OVER the fence into our spectator area.
I saw a photo of Miller walking around the garage area a few days later, with a neck collar on, so I don't think he was too seriously injured. I don't ever remember him at Indy after that. (note the rookie stripes on his rear wing, I think he was Gary Bettenhausen's teammate that year).

I purchased this photo from someone back in the 70's and had Gary sign it.
Gary Bettenhausen 1974. (I thought Pocono but the back of the photo says Ontario?) Not sure, I've never been to either track.

Not really. Ontario had only a few bleachers on pit road.Originally Posted by KevMcNJ
The picture is from Pocono. The stands at Ontario were built up on a berm that extended all the way down the front stretch into turn one.

Beautiful car, terrible design.Originally Posted by Ovalmeister
The Dragon chassis was a copy of the Coyote. The Coyote gave up speed in the turns but was very fast on the straights with the Foyt V-8. The Dragon was just as slow in the turns, but was powered by a standard Offy which had much less horsepower than the Foyt so it didn't have the same straightaway speed as the Foyt powered Coyote.
So the car was slow in the turns and slow on the straights. Other than that it was a good car.

I thought there might be some from the same angle showing the difference between Ontario and Pocono, but no such luck. But it does go along with the helmet theme earlier in the thread.![]()
