Thread: Semi official cool old Indy car pics thread

You could also look at the "Day After" photographs taken on the main straight the day after the race.
Just out of curiosity, what does the Carousel 1 die-cast depict? They usually do a thorough photo research check to make the models look as close as possible to Race Day configuration.

Speaking of post-win crashes, wasn't Dario's 500-winning car one he got airborne in and wadded up in a later race?

Between Penske, Ganassi, et al hanging on to winning cars, Ebay, cash-strapped teams, and the longevity/subsequent use of the Dallaras from 2003- present, it may be a while before the IMS Museum gets another accurate Winning Car.

    oh indyrjc.......

that's not my reason for wanting those pics/films.

the reason is, i was IN THEM!

because of the totally tragic and messed up circumstances surrounding the race that year, i was standing behind the crew as they pushed the car from the pits.

and because of the rain and those circumstances there were not many pics/films taken during those moments.

i did see a "stp" commercial run that summer that included the scene, but have not been able to find a copy of it.

just something i wanted for my own vanity i guess.

    that's why i keep asking.

Well, I might have been looking right at you as I was leaning against the front row rail of the old Tower Terrace seats in front of the Control Tower. I was looking directly down into Victory Lane. My most vivid memory is of the white upholstery on the car and the fact that car was pushed up on the ramps without the driver. In those days I worked at the track selling programs which gave me access to go into any stand that I wanted. Unfortunately, I also had clear views of the disasters that occurred that day on the both the track and in the pits; especially in the pits.

ME TOO! that's how i ended up on pit road that day. after selling on the first two days, i just went to have fun on the third.

ended up (like another tfer) jumping over the chainlink fence down at david hobbs pit; then knowing the race was soon to be flagged, running down to the victory lane area. there i moved in right behind the crew as they were pushing the car from pit road. a state trooper tapped me on the shoulder as to get me out of there, he looked at me and i at him. he had been my 6th grade teacher!!! he recognized me and allowed me to stay beside him as we followed the car...........

    unf'g believable!!! but true!

oh, the good ole days at INDY! too bad it was one of the most tragic years in the history of the 500.

but for me, it was one of the most exciting and memorable ones for purely selfish reasons.

If you live in Indy or when you are in town, there is an Indy 500 memorabilia store that is on the NE corner of 16th and Lynhurst. They may have copies of Carl Hungness' 1973 Indy 500 yearbook. The cover is a shot of Gordy waving from inside of his winning car and he is surrounded by a multitude of people. Carl often had many photos that are not what you would normally see in newspapers and IMS publications, so within there might be some more photos of Johncock's car getting pushed to victory lane as well.
    God speed!

Do you remember having to be at the track at something like 4:30AM on the First Day of Time Trials and the Race? And I remember having to get my bundles of programs in one of the little Quonset hut buildings in the infield a couple of times. It seems like another time I picked them up under the stands on the main straight just outside of the tunnel.

not intending to go off topic on the thread... but a few short notes.

yes, the pickup point for me was under stand A (usually got inside the track around 2:30 am); and the cashier was there too. it's unbelievable today that they would consign 2000 programs to a little kid like me (14 y.o.). i customized a "feed truck" (big two-wheeled dolly), loaded it down and headed for the split on the east end of the sw vista. from there i covered from E stand to the SEvista and even ventured over into the snakepit. but never in the pit after 7am, too crazy.

i had a kid helping watch the programs while i worked the stands and made trips back to the cashier to exchange LOTS of $$$ for receipts.

they also used to park the tour buses right there behind swv, so i'd sell a bundle as they stepped off the each bus!

made lots of $$$ on 1st day qualifications and race day; played mostly on the other qual days.

started as helper for a guy that was on the main gate, then on my own from 69 - 77........

    yes, all good memories.

This die-cast appears to be VERY accurate, from numbers, paint, etc.

I've studied the 73 winner extensively. While I don't have images handy of race day, this is a race day version I built based on my research. As far as markings and colors go, it's at least 99% accurate right down to the point where each number is drawn differently from one another as it was on the actual car:

The 73 winner also had one of the most unique sponsors... just above right of the second fuel port on the sidepod, the white and blue circle... Skylab.

The Carousel die cast has the shape of the car wrong, and there are some marking inaccuracies. It's subtle, but if you compare it to good photos you can see the difference. They've also been known to get things wrong. Their 75 Jorgensen Eagle had a Union 76 decal on it. While that was on the car at some point in the season, it was never on the car at Indy.

Superb! The IMS museum folks need to see this so they can either buy it, or adjust the car that they have.

I'd almost like to use this one in a "Caption this photo" thread:

.....'Here are a few of the 1973 Winner if you guys' would like for further scrutiny. The top two are from photo day after qualifying and the bottom two are supposed to have been taken during the race itself. I even left the caption below the B&W, which states that it's taken "2 laps before the race was called." Seems kind of wierd? Bright sunny day and two laps later it's dark and pouring down rain?............................................. .................................................. ..

"Bright sunny day and two laps later it's dark and pouring down rain?"

What's so unusual about that in Indiana?

I can guarantee you that despite what the Hungness yearbook states, this is NOT a race day shot, not only due to the sun, but the markings. Race day had white front wings, white rear wing endplates, KLG Spark plug logo and a number 20 on the rear wing plates, and a number 20 on the oil cooler (where it says STP Patrick Racing Team).

Agree, there was definitlely no sunlight that I can remember on race day that year. Your detail on the markings is impressive.

.....'MichaelP, 'Thank you for your input. Although some of the discrepancies that some of us find on here aren't as big a thorn-in-the-side to me as they are to others, it's still fun pointing them out. Also, I seem to remember between qualifying and the race that year, that is when Gordy switched over to his baby-blue helmet that Bell Helmets made exclusively for him with the very small "slit" opening? The only one of its kind. That's another reason why I doubted pics of him in the actual race with his traditional white helmet.
