Boy there's a name I do not remember. Looking at the full size pic here on my hard drive, I do see that name on the side of the car. What if anything was this guys pedigree?
Miaskiewicz raced in the Can-Am series - the mid-80's era Can-Am series - and also raced in Atlantics. I remembered the Can-Am but had to look up to discover he was 1985 series champion.Originally Posted by sneva33

I don't believe that any of the Interscope "Batmobiles" ever ran anywhere except Indianapolis. Danny won six Championship races in total with five of those wins on ovals. He was nearly always a contender for a win; especially in the late 1970s. I remember seeing him win a race at Michigan while driving an Interscope Parnelli that was especially memorable. Even though he had a pretty large lead Ongais didn't slow down late in the race. For the last twenty laps or so Ongais continued driving on the edge. The crowd was on their feet as Ongais' car twitched and slid up the banking a couple of times each lap on his way to the win. Don't know who the 12 is. No 12 is mentioned in the reports. If I had to guess I'd say Rube.
And in the 66, is Mark in the Sunoco Lola Ford.
Mark would finish second.

I'm confused...could this photo be in 1971? And could the second car possibly be David Hobbs, #68 Penske team mate to Donohue?
Memory is stretched on this one but I don't remember Ruby in this car in 1970, I could be wrong. Super cool photo regardless!!

Ruby ran this Mongoose as car number 25 in 1970 and then as car 12 in 1971. Hobbs is behind Ruby in car 68 I'd say.
Some years ago, Tommy Kendall came to the fall vintage event at WGI and my wife and I were fortunate to have lunch with him. Ruby was one of my favorites and i was pulling for him.
The problem is that I can find mark in a car that is EXACTLY like this one, in the '70 race. However I cannot find a number 25 finishing the race.
In '69 Gordo ran the 12 but it wasn't anything like this car.
I'd even wager 2 bucks on the second car being Mark and would wager maybe .50 on Ruby being in front....

EDIT: It's definitely not Donohue in '71 because unless Mark and Penske were just shaking down their old car, they had a pointy-nose McLaren M16 in '71.
Upon a web search, it has to be Hobbs and Ruby, '71. Looks like they ran the fancy new McLaren for Mark and the old Lola for David. That year Donohue ran the 66 McLaren, Hobbs the 68 Lola, and Ruby the 12 Mongoose.

only in '71 were there both 66 and 12 cars. in the race.
And to think for all these years I thought it was Mark...

Cool pics! The 1971 McLarens are still one of my favorite Indy cars. Sleek wedge design & beautifully prepared by both Team McLaren & Penske Racing.
I'm halfway thru the Mark Donohue biography. Just read the chapter on the 1971 Indy 500. Penske Racing was comitted to race the Lola for 1971. Penske & Donohue were in England to meet with Eric Broadley about updates for 1971. While they were in England, they stopped in at the McLaren shop to inquire about a car for the 1971 Can-Am. Once Mark saw the 1971 McLaren M16, he knew it would make a great speedway car & talked Roger into getting one. That's how Hobbs ended up in the Lola.
Oddly enough, both cars suffered gear failure during the 1971 500. Turned out that Hewland was using lower grade steel in their gears than had been requested.
It also looks like the Lola was rebodied a bit to look more like the McLaren. Also, was the Lola Ford powered? Looks like the Lola had a Ford whereas the McLaren had an Offenhauser.
