Something isn't right there. The March/Porsche that won a race was Teo Fabi at the 1989 Mid-Ohio race. It was the 89P that won their last race, not the weird looking 90POriginally Posted by flatlander_48
Great read on the 90P...and 89P...and more...and more...

There was also the Alfa-Romeo/March 90CA that Roberto and Big Al drove at Indy in 1990. It had a funny, stubby looking nosecone.

You know, I thought that was weird but I didn't check it out when I posted it. The information came from here... I think I will drop them a note...Originally Posted by Doctorindy

more to staying on topic, found this cool shot yesterday
looks like south short chute 1953 or '54
what would you give to have a seat those photographers have in the stand for that race?
surprised that they let all those trees stand to the right that are totally blocking the view of many fans of T1 and T2

.....'Stick500, 'Wow! That is one of the coolest, greatest and most classic pics on here. And great quality, too. As far as the guys going O/T, whenever Linda's name is mentioned inevitably, it's gonna happen! For the guys that are big Linda Vaughn fans, you can go over to The H.A.M.B. Message Board that has a whole thread devoted to her. Or you can go directly to marcsproule's flickr.com site and sift through his 3 or 4 hundred pics to find the ones of Linda. (Thanks, Marc!) I've posted the link......'Now, where were we???

That last shot shows the immensness, power, and allure of the Speedway compared to today's concrete canyons. That turn one image takes the breath away.

This is not the same quality but shows the power of hauling into turn one...

It just dawned on me... I was in the stands on the left. I have always questioned my memory because I remembered the stands being covered. Of course they have not been covered for years now and I thought my memory was wrong. Sam Hanks won the race from the thirteenth starting position in the little yellow laydown. I can't seem to pick the car out in this picture..
It was my second race.

That's what I figured.... He started thirteenth
That could be him...

Zoom: I too have sat in that stand, although it was 1960 for my first 500. I was a 17 year old Michigan kid. Missed 1963 during my Navy time, but this year will make number 50. This stand (D), remained covered through the 1965 race. The roof was removed when the first sections of the SW Vista stand was built for the 1966 race so as to improve sight-lines for the Vista folks. Stand D remained until the new tunnel was built under the south chute.
Someone also mentioned that the old Speedway had a visual greatness and expansiveness that appears missing today. I would have to agree. The removal of infield stands, the wide expanse of flat, paved and sand areas in the turns and much of the general construction, although improving sight-lines, has rendered much of the track a somewhat sterile look.

My first race was viewed from Grandstand D in '56. I sold newspapers, when I was only 11 years old.![]()
Nothing is more sterile in appearance than the "new" Gargage Area. It added some much needed room for the teams but it also cut down a lot of what fans could see when just looking through the fence. And a lot of the atmosphere of the old wooden garages was lost. It's too bad that they could not have built something modern but with more color and in a similar style to the old garages. Today's garages seem more like a public storage facility.
