Thanks Buildy. I don't know if I have any of your Uncle or not. I will look and post them if I can find some. I always like Jerry. Two friends of mine were at the Phoenix race when he finished second and held off Mario to do so.

I think he did drive for AJ that year. Don't know why he was in the car. IIRC it was on the 2nd Sat of qualifying. Don't know if Nige was unavail. or what the details of it were, just remember hearing it on the PA then seeing the car come by.
I was just curious is all. Seems odd for a driver to take laps in another team's car.

Thank you-one thing is sure-Jerry got everything he could out of the limited equipment he had to run.
He ran wheel to wheel with teams spending 10 times as much as he was.
A bit of correction on Phoenix-Jerry was running second,catching Leader Tom Sneva at a second per lap with 20 to go. He had a dice with Mario for about 40 laps. Mario blew up.
Unfortunately,Jerry`s side radiator had a pin hole leak and he ended up losing the motor. If not for that,I`m almost sure Jerry would have taken first that day.
He got the biggest ovation I ever heard at Phoenix for his efforts.
I wish you could hear the whole story of how the crew pieced the motor together out of odd parts from several engines just to make it to the line that day.

My dad was there helping him and building the cars with Jerry.
No rich daddy,no connections,or sponors,just a desire to make it to the big time,somehow. He almost,but never quite made it to the top rung.

I had a friend of mine who worked for that team, and had total access to the team for the entire month that year. Chip was a great guy, very friendly, and taken from us WAY to early. The Eagles of that era were my favorite IndyCars, absolutely beautiful.
The only one better was Mosely and the Pepsi Challenger.

Your welcome Indy, sorry it took awhile to find them. It was years before I had found out about Chips' plane crash. I was in the military in Spain at that time and kind of out of the loop. I was saddened to find out later, I always pulled for him to do well at the races.OVALMEISTER -

I also loved the eagles of that era and you're correct, the Pepsi Challenger was an awesome looking car. I loved the Jet Engineering cars also.

ZOOM, thanks for the 1983 Sneva photos. Really nice gettin his teammate "Coogan" right behind him. I did not get a chance to talk to Tom after the Indy win until the Cleveland race but he was still pumped way up. Thanks again/

Don't short yourself there, those are great pics. Like I said I had access to the garage and pit areas that year, and have some awesome pics of "The Mose", and Danny Ongais' batmobile, they are probably the best pictures I ever took using film. They would be on here but don't have a way to scan them.

After you scan them, you post them to a site like PhotoBucket. There are others, but their names escape me at the moment. Once your photos are on a hosting service, you can call them back to this site. Search around TrackForum as there may be some more specific instructions.
I read in a book that Mario was having all kinds of "axle" trouble in that race and that the ride through the grass "unlocked" the axle in question, and he reportedly was turning very fast laps after that happened.
