(kidding! But come on... Atkins? Do you really think bacon all day is gonna melt away the pounds for long? )

    It does work.
I lost 30 pounds 6 years ago and have only gained back 7.
I just watch the calories now (except for the brewskies).

I'm sure it works for some, tho I would guess your weight loss has more to do with you than Atkins.

I commented only because where I used to work there were about 5 or 6 guys that tried it, right about 5-6 years ago, and they were just ridiculous.

One of them, a guy who is 6'8" and about 360ish (Big Frank), would go to McDonalds and get 8 hamburgers without buns. Others were going crazy at breakfast buffets.

None lost any significant weight, and just about all of them were on South Beach or something else when New Year's rolled around again (with the same results).

Atkins doubters have always cracked me up. I'm not sure what their problem is with the diet but they always feel the need to voice their opinion.

I'd type more but I've got six pounds of bacon frying. It's just a snack between meals, of course.

Truth: Whatever works! I quit smoking 13 months ago, and I've gained 37 pounds, but in the old days when I went on a diet, I would smoke like a fiend, and drink gallons of coffee, now I don't have the tobacco as a crutch, I'm having trouble getting on and sticking with a diet.....

Well, I have two simple problems with it:

    1) Long-term, for most it does not work; and
    2) Longer term, it will kill you. I have a brother who tried that for three years and all it did was make him fatter and screw up his health. Everyone I know who has tried that diet has ultimately gained back everything they lost.

You are far better off doing this:

    1) Eat whatever you want except sugary foods (more later) but greatly decrease the size of your portions--make them no bigger than the size of your fist. The exception is green vegetables; eat as many of these as you want. Eat no more than three foods at a time.

    2) Balance protein with a complex carb. Never eat one without the other.

    3) Skip breakfast. You do not need it. You are much better off eating twice a day, six to seven hours apart. No snacks; you don't need them either. Drink lots of water and especially "H2Orange" (4 ounces of non-concentrate orange juice diluted per 32 ounces of water)--no less than 100 ounces a day.

    4) Chew VERY slowly when you eat. Your meals should take no less than 25 minutes each--ten minutes, a five minute break where you don't eat, and ten more minutes or longer. The five-minute break is to give your stomach time to tell your brain you've consumed food.

    5) Stay away from sugar for the first ten weeks. After that, make it a rare treat. It is the LAST thing your body needs. Especially stay away from high fructose corn syrup, which actually short-circuits the chemical that tells your body you've eaten something. You can drink literally a hundred cans of Coke a day and still eat three full meals because your body doesn't know that hundred cans of Coke added 1500 calories to it.

I just finished a ten-week program called Naturally Slim which emphasizes these principles. I have lost 35 pounds, my blood pressure is 110 over 60, my cholesterol has dropped 40 points and I have never felt better in my life. What's more, I can occasionally "cheat" and get right back on the program with no problem. It works.

    That's actually not true.

You don't have to go hungry for periods of time to eat wisely and healthfully. Breakfast is a good idea for most people both because it raises metabolism and because you start the day more energetic and less listless. And snacking is good if done right because it spreads your intake out of a longer amount of time which means more calories burned in digestion.

Snacking in small amounts is great because it keeps my physical / mental condition much more level throughout the day and because it means I'm not as hungry when it's time for lunch or dinner and so I'm likely to eat less.

Sure, skipping meals can work, but fasting can work even better, and it's not necessary either. And skipping meals can also backfire. Schoolkids who skip breakfast are more likely to eat unhealthful lunches/dinners, less likely to exercise, and less likely to learn effectively.

    Drink lots of water
I think this is the most underrated part of smart nutrition, and here's why. A lot of people are told stuff like "Only eat when you're hungry, and eat just enough so that you'll be full. It's really that simple." The problem is that following this formula leads to overeating for most of us, because the average person is thirsty for large parts of the day due to insufficient water as well as dehydration from too much caffeine. And the more consistently this is true of a person, the less likely their body is to be able to distinguish hunger from thirst. For many people who overeat, they honestly feel they are only eating when they are hungry because they can't even tell that they are actually just thirsty.

With all due respect, if you don't like the Atkins diet then don't use it.

But shut the **** up about what diet works for me.

    ******* know-it-alls.

OK--didn't mean to **** you off; but do keep a close eye on your cholesterol. That diet nearly killed one of my brothers. Don't want to see it happen to you.

I wouldn't have posted what I did if it didn't work. Between those of us on the test plan at my work, we have lost literally over a ton of weight.

A lot of what you post here is fact (and what the Naturally Slim program teaches), including the part about being thirsty when you think you're hungry. That's why the program says most adults--key word--don't actually need breakfast. Most people eat breakfast as soon as they wake up, thinking they're hungry, when in reality they're dehydrated from overnight sleep. The program says to drink two 10-20 ounce glasses of water or H2Orange instead, as soon after you wake up as practical. You will still fire up your metabolism and you will still have the energy boost, without eating when you're not really hungry--the single action that makes the most fat on a human being.

Google the name Marcia Upson sometime. She can explain the "no breakfast" angle far better than I can. It's amazing how much of what's accepted as fact about breakfast and health is really just marketing to sell certain kinds of food to people. She makes the wonderful point that, before the pork and dairy farmers started marketing, people generally started their work days several hours before eating a meal with no harm to their health.

Not picking on TD or anything , but it's fascinating how sensitive people get about this stuff. Fact is, everybody's different. . . NutriSystem works well for my wife, and she gets to eat a hell of a lot more than I do using Naturally Slim. But I no longer consider bigger portion sizes better and, as already posted, am almost ridiculously healthier than I was after only ten weeks. What's really funny is my mother got on one of my older brothers to have his cholesterol checked; it was sky-high, and the people at the clinic where he got it checked gave him some simple tips to bring it down. Not only did he bring it down by something like 60 points, he lost 23 pounds too. The tips were almost EXACTLY the same as what Naturally Slim teaches you!

    No sweat, pidge.

I'm sensitive because so many are so freaking negative toward the diet without ever walking in my shoes.

The fact is that I was born with a voracious appetite. I've worked with several folks who eat worse than I do but aren't overweight because their bodies metabolize the food better than my body does. Yet they are convinced that they are somehow more disciplined than I am.

    Whatever dudes...

The lowfat diets don't work for me. The Atkins diet does. Nevermind the fact that its almost exactly the diabetics' diet. The important thing is that you won't find me criticizing your diet. Whatever works for you...

Well, hope y'all will pardon me while I get on the NS soapbox again. . .

The simple fact is, "lowfat" diets work long-term for almost no one because:

    * Your body needs some fat (butter in moderation is actually good for you!), and

    * Most "lowfat" foods replace fat with either excessive amounts of sugar or salt, which not only helps make you fatter, it's horrible for your overall health.

I can relate to the voracious appetite part, TD. I have one of those too. But simply slowing down as I eat does wonders to tame it.

Truth: Good for you...I'm all kind of frustrated in my attempt to get the bowl rollin'! I started goin' to Gold's Gym, and I'm getting back into racketball, but I got a long way to go to lose this 37 pounds. Keep it up, it sounds like you're doin' it!

So far I've done it on diet alone. Exercise is the next step.

    Tres cool, dude.

I'm at 38 pounds lost over 12 weeks, still dropping slowly but surely. And, with exercise, still have an annoying blob around my middle that suggests maybe the 160 the BMI chart says I should be isn't that far off. . .
