Posting Pictures - Sticky Please

It's the Month of May and lots of folks will be trying to post pictures. Life's too short to hit links all the time. Please sticky this so folks know how to post pictures.

1. Picture must be on a recognized web site - not your local drive
2. Select the picture, then Right-Click, then choose Properties
3. Copy the URL in the properties of the picture (not the URL of the web site)
4. In your post, select Insert Image, then paste the copied picture properties URL
5. Done

You can also Preview Post before submitting to ensure it worked.

Whenever you are trying to post a picture on TF, the web address you use HAS to end in ".jpg" or ".gif". There may be other file types that work, but I know from personal experience that jpg and gif work while ".png" does not

The standard web address on flickr (for example http://www.flickr.com/photos/48160919@N04/4413528069/ ) does not end in .jpg so you need to do a bit more than just copy the web address


First - Right mouse click on the picture you wish to post and select "Properties"




Copy the image location web address (that ends in .jpg)




In your posting or reply box, click on the "Insert Image" icon




Paste the web address (ending in .jpg) that you previously copied into the box and click OK




Click "Save" or "Post Quick Reply"




You have now posted an image that is hosted on Flickr

Then using this "[" type of bracket and "]" this type of bracket
you type "bracket"youtube"bracket"
then the bold face part after the = sign
then "bracket"/youtube"bracket"]

So it becomes....

Paste the video YouTube url location into your message and then BBCode bracket the url with youtube. If you don't understand that, click on a "Reply With Quote" on a message here that has an embedded video and look at the code.

I finally tried the Photobucket app and it works great. You can open it and take a picture with your smartphone camera, which can then be saved to Photobucket immediately. Then you copy the IMG tag and put it in your TF post. Works great. You can also access other pictures stored on your phone or cloud storage to upload quickly as well.

This is a test. I uploaded an image directly from the iPhone Apple Photos app to Twitter. Then I went to my Twitter account and did a control click on the image (right click on PC) and copied the URL for the image location and then pasted it here with img BBCode tags and the suffix :small, :medium and :large after the .jpg. You can do a quote to see how the img tags are set up. This is the result.

I've posted several pics from Twitter in the past but lately it seems if the person uses Instagram to post the pic on Twitter there isn't anyway to copy the url and post it here.

If someone has figured this out, please let me know.

Instagram cut their ties with Twitter now that they are owned by Facebook. So when you link an Instagram photo it goes to their website and I haven't investigated what to do with those photos yet. When you post directly from the Apple's Photo app to Twitter or if you browse and select a photo and upload directly to Twitter from your computer then you can do what I described. Also, the :small, :medium and :large suffix on works from photos posted directly to Twitter. If I copy and paste a Twitter photo here it will have the :large suffix after the .jpg. I then just edit and change it to :medium.

The best place to store photos for linking into this forum, IMO, is Photobucket. They make it so easy to do.

Life is too short to screw with this. You want a picture of something I've posted, look for it yourself.

With the recent software upgrade, the buttons and interface have changed slightly, but the basic principle is till the same- you need to use a URL (Universal Resource Locator) link to post images that everyone can see.

That means, you can't upload them directly from your computer- no "browsing" for the file - they need to be loaded to an image-hosting server somewhere else first, then you post the URL (internet address) of the image, including, usually, the "http://www." part, as well as ALWAYS the last part, file extension, which is usually ".jpg" but might also be ".tif" or ".gif". PDF's (".pdf" won't work, and neither will ".asp" or ".htm" or other types of internet file coding.

One tricky part I've noticed is that by default, on the new interface, there is a check mark in a box asking if you want to make a local copy of the image file:

[X] Retrieve remote file and reference locally <-YOU NEED TO UNCHECK THAT BOX.

Otherwise, again what you post will be an ATTACHED image, not a LINKED image, and since TF doesn't have oodles of fileservers like google and facebook, everyone won't be able to see the file.

So: use the URL option, and uncheck that box. Best practice is to "copy & paste" the URL from the hosting source into the image brackets for TF.
