Another Young Man Named Hall, Another Case of ALS

"Crew member stays positive as he fights ALS"

"Everybody has a race in life. I have ALS." [Carey Hall]

Brian Hall died from ALS on Carb Day eight years ago. Carey Hall fights the same disease today. Still no known cause. Still no cure.

I understand that a lot of cars are carrying the Carey's Hope logo on Sunday

My heart goes out to him....and to his family as this is very much a disease that affects the entire family. I wish there was some way or something we coulld do to reach out to him in order to support and encourage him. Anyone here who knows him might make him aware of Brian's Wish and make sure he knows we are all (includinging myself personally) available to him or his family.

In the program for today's race it lists who sponsers each lap. lap 144 is in honor of tim trusnik. Tim
Tim grew up n Speedway and passed away last year after a long fight with ALS. Terrible. I'll keep the Halls in my prayers

Today is the 71st anniversary of Lou Gehrig's farewell...

    http://als-advocacy.blogspot.com/201...ly-4-1939.html

Unfortunately the outlook for people with ALS today is much the same that Lou Gehrig faced in 1939. We must do more to find the cause and cure!

A gentleman with ALS created this NASCAR design and I know he would appreciate your voting in the online contest. He's trying to raise awareness. Thanks.

On espn.go.com today, there was a story (FROM AP) that a scientist has linked brain/head injuries to ALS. Here's the link. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/news/story?id=5470059 I wonder if the same types of head injuries sustained in racing accidents and TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury) - w/OIF and OEF vets from explosions and roll overs could lead to ALS in the near future? My father-in-law was a Marine and suffered a TBI roll over at the end of the Korean War (pull out) and died in 2001 from ALS. Any doctors out there think the same way?

The NY Times broke the head trauma story this morning and the major news outlets have been buzzing. Head trauma has been one of the many suspected trigger theories for ALS for years. All of this coverage of the subject (especially at the start of football season) is causing a lot of important interest in more research.

There has been an established connection between military service and ALS --
    http://www.alsa.org/files/pdf/ALS_Military_Paper.pdf
Any veteran who develops ALS is automatically given service-related disability benefits.
There are many theories about what the military connection might be -- head trauma, stress, chemical exposures,... -- but so far, nobody has figured out what causes veterans to be twice as likely to have ALS as the general population.

All of the news coverage today is waking a lot of people up to the fact that all these years since Lou Gehrig died and we still don't know what causes ALS. Conventional thinking is that there is a genetic predisposition and a possible trigger (or triggers), but at the end of the day, we have failed to figure it out after all these years.

How cool is this!!! From Sarah Fisher Racing...

    ________________
Indianapolis, IN (Aug. 24, 2010)-SarahFisher, driver/owner of Sarah Fisher Racing (SFR), announced today that shewill be sporting a new look on the rear wing of her No. 67 Dollar General Hondapowered Dallara for the next two races of the IZOD IndyCar ® Series season, butfor a very special reason.

In January 2010, Carey Hall, owner ofHall's Motorsports Refinishing (HMR), painter for Fisher's team in Indianapolis and fueler for SFR since its inception in 2008, was diagnosed with ALS. According tothe ALS Association, "Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a neurodegenerative disease that usually attacks both upper and lower motorneurons and causes degeneration throughout the brain and spinal cord. A common first symptom is a painless weakness in a hand, foot, arm or leg, which occurs in more than half of all cases. Other early symptoms include speech swallowing or walking difficulty."

Fisher hopes that by proudly displaying the Carey's Hope logo this weekend, she will raise awareness of the horrible disease and raise funds to help Carey and his family in their battle.

"Dollar General and SFR are one big team that workstogether and supports each other during times of need," said Rick Dreiling, Dollar General's chairman and CEO. "We stand behind Carey and his family during this challenging time and are committed to helping him win his battle with this disease."

"Carey and his family are a big part of the family here at SFR," said Fisher. "We are very proud of his encouragement and dedication towards getting through this disease and the inspiration he lends toall of us every day. Not only has he been a part of our team and our family, but the family he has will always be a part of our lives. I hope we can help him in a bigger way by getting the word out there and sharing with our sport the intensity and passion the people who support it, have."

In the SFR race shop, located on the Westside of Indianapolis, ALS wristbands are seen on almost every employee. "We're behind him all the way," said Fisher's crew chief, Anton Julian. "Carey has been a vital part of this organization and we're like a big family here. We'll do anything we can to help him through this battle."

Hall resides in Greenwood, Ind. with his wife,Carla, and three sons, Christopher (20), Colin (11) and Cruz (6). Please visit www.careyshope.com to make a donation or to purchase a Carey's Hope decal, t-shirt or an ALS wristband.

If anyone would like to chime in with words of thanks on the facebook page, that might help keep SFR and Dollar General especially interested in the cause ;-)

    Here's the latest scoop.

Carey Hall will be fueling Sarah Fisher's Dollar General car at Chicagoland. He wants to honor others who are also dealing with ALS, and Carey will be wearing a special helmet with the names of 30 other ALS patients on Saturday night. After the race, Sarah will autograph the helmet and it will be auctioned off at a future event to raise funds for the ALS Association Indiana Chapter.

    Totally cool.

    Thumbs up

Our prayers go out to Carey Hall and his family. If some of you don't remember, Sarah Fisher was a big supporter for Brians Wish. She went to hospice to visit him, did an autograph session at the convention center (and brought Vitor Meira along with her) for Brians Wish. She also took time out of her schedule to attend his memorial service. She along with several drivers at the time displayed Brians Wish stickers on their cars. I commend her and the many other people that helped us raise awareness for ALS. This is a chance to revive that needed awareness. There have been 8 years since Brian passed and very little has been accomplished in finding a cure for this terrible disease.... Again many thanks for what you have done. Now its time to gear up again and make a surge.
