That's what I mentioned above, but we didn't know that Shell would be a primary sponsor. Could be they signed up for more $$$, more $$$ is coming from the Cup side of things because NASCAR won't let them have big Shell logos on the cup car, or could be they shuffled some money around and are selling their primary sponsorship of Helio on the cheap.

Seadog is right, this has been brewing for quite a while. But now it appears that Shell will become primary on Helio's car. Won't know for sure until they announce it.
Funny reading the grand statements in that April thread like, "If Verizon pulls out of NASCAR, you can say goodbye to Verizon in Indycar."
We're witnessing a shift of some strong sponsors from spec taxis to Indycars.

I've been talking about Sunoco not being pleased, but I forgot....this is Penske. Nobody dare questions The Captain. NOBODY.

Hmm... if the car matches the uniform, it will still be more red than yellow. That makes me inclined to believe the livery will be one we haven't seen before on a Shell car.

Great to see, if it is officially announced. As for Pennzoil, maybe that is with Briscoe?

I just don't think Sunoco is infusing major dough into the IICS to demand exclusivity or be pissed about Shell.

Woah, nice spy work Big Mo. I'm really surprised Team Penske would put that image out there before any kind of announcement.

PS: You can't infer the car's colors from the uniform alone. Also, I think it was Cavin in one of his Q&A's or maybe on trackside who said that Penske would announce sponsorship for Helio AND Ryan soon.

I created a thread about that in the Racing biz section. Of course the nattering nabobs of negativity that abound over there said I was out to lunch

That and I have never heard of IndyCar dictating who can or cannot sponsor a team like NACAR always does.

Interesting that Helio's firesuit, despite showing the new sponsor (Shell), is still sporting the Honda logo.

They're still running Hondas for 2011 so that's why they have the Honda logo, in 2012 the firesuit will have the bowtie.

I thought I heard that they may be rebranded as "Shell Team Penske"

Well look at that. How different will that be. Also notice Briscoe's pic still has Team Penske. Gotta wonder if that will change too.

I didn't take the photo, my best racing buddy did yesterday (Tuesday). I told him he had to text me the image.

That's what Penske does with all its cars. Power's team is designated Verizon Team Penske. Remember Marlboro Team Penske? So Helio's car only may be Shell Team Penske.

Might be. They probably didn't get to take a new picture of him yet?

It wouldn't exactly have been IndyCar saying so, but yes NASCAR is now paying for its monopoly rules. I wonder who's next?

A good judge of health (IMO) of a motorsport is the amount of Beer and Oil (primary) sponsorships. This is one (that isn't tied to Chavez....allegedly).

I see the V-Power logo for Briscoe and Power in the old Mobil 1 spot. Verizon is associate on Helio & Briscoe's cars. Briscoe may still get the Altria money as it ramps down (or it could be Penskebux)
From what I have seen this is the accurate answer. I am not sure if RP had another fully funded Primary in the wings it would still be Team Penske or not though. It sure would be interesting to see that agreement.

    A few thoughts:

Briscoe is probably still "Team Penske" They said they were willing to do one car that way. When they announced Briscoe coming back, it became clear that either he or Helio had additional sponsorship. Here it is.

Re: the Pennzoil idea: Does Peak have any exclusivity re: the ability to block other lubricants from primary sponsorship of a team?
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

I don't think Peak does. I'm not even sure if Izod does as they allowed William Rast to sponsor Saavedra at Indy. Granted I don't think that Izod has a jeans line. Randy has said he doesn't want to exclude anyone except a sponsor at the title (Izod) level.

I was asking only because the deal predated RB.

Didn't stop Venezuelans EJ and Milka from bringing theirs.

Dunno. They all seem to have Shell V-Power - signs on them. Of course that could be photoshop rather than whole new suits but I doubt it.

I would had loved to see Pennzoil Penske #6 back. Hopefully they at least make the new Shell car look cool.

I think it's more likely to be Team Shell Penske or Team Penske Shell...

    Shell = STP?..

Maybe not. Look closely at the upper right (our left) of Ryan's suit, under the Honda patch. I do believe that says "V-Power."

Verizon has Will Power... Helio has V-Power... I see the commercials writing themselves...

Gonna be interesting to see how his car is going to look next year. Count me as one who liked the Shell scheme on Brack's car.

Cavin just said that Penske is having a press conference on Dec. 4th at the NASCAR banquet, where he will announce Indy 500 sponsorship. Hornish not included.
