I say no. If I am motivated to watch a certain race, NFL game, Baseball game or whatever, I don't stop and think, "Gee whose announcing?, I just might not watch because of that."

I tune into the event, period. In my mind I can see what happening and I am my own announcer. It's nice when the TV guys agree with me but they don't always!

Larry and Darrell need some work. I rewatched the finish of that race and they were all 3 talking over each other, trying to get their own cheesy line in. IMHO, it is Mike Joy's call, period!

To me they are kind of like "the death of a thousand cuts". They don't make me turn it off, but they make it a lot easier.

I actually find them more interesting/less smarmy than the ESPN announcers, so I'm slightly more likely to watch a Fox NASCAR race than an ESPN one.

Well, in this world where everyone's paranoid ... OF COURSE Fox is FORCING these announcers on us. They are OBVIOUSLY the DEVIL.

In the real world, Fox has hired the announcers it thinks will maximize its ratings and--read carefully--has hired the announcers that meet the approval of sponsors of the broadcast. Oh, include NASCAR as a sponsor.

Remember, it's a BUSINESS forum, not an "opinion" forum. Samples of one are meaningless.

    My personal take...:

Mike Joy - Good enough for Ken Squier, good enough for me...

Larry McReynolds - "inside" the sport since 1975... Crew Chief for Ricky Rudd, Davey Allison and Dale Earnhardt... If it bolts on the car or goes on in the shop, he knows about it. I'm good with that.

Darrell Waltrip - Let's try and forget about the "Boogity" stuff for one moment...A 29-year career, 84 Cup wins, 3-time series Champion, 3-time series runner-up, Daytona 500 winner and 5-time winner of the Coca-Cola/World 600 (still a record).... NASCAR's 'Driver of the Decade' (1980') and the first to win $10 Million (1990). From a driver's perspective, I don't think many can question his input... But personally, that doesn't mean I enjoy listening to him all the time... I liken Darrell to NASCAR's version of Uncle Bobby in the booth... and that's not always a bad thing.

But I'm just a viewer... so who cares.

Yes they help MRN and PRN as fans mute the TV audio and turn on the radio. I've done it on more than one occasion.

DW is the annoying co-worker that never shuts up even when he has nothing clever, interesting or important to say.
We've all had one of them
Faster than a bullet from a gun
    He is faster than everyone
Quicker than the blinking of an eye
Like a flash you could miss him going by
No one knows quite how he does it but it's true they say
He's the master of going faster. -George Harrison

I like both Larry Mac and DW as they both had very successful careers in NASCAR. And while to this day I still respect the heck out of both of them I do question whether they're good for the broadcast. Not from the experience or technical standpoint as they both are very knowledgeable, more from the southern-accent and vocabulary standpoint.

Obviously NASCAR has decent television ratings and has a large fan-base across the United States. However the southern accent and some of the vocabulary gets irritating to me and IMO lessens the perception of the sport being one of the 'majors'. In the past I've heard some people who aren't big race fans poke fun at the broadcast team due to this. Whether that really holds any merit across the broad spectrum of fans or casual viewers is debatable. And since my interest has waned in the past several years I suppose my opinion means nothing and holds little-to-no merit here.
My first Indy 500 was 1973, haven't missed one since 1981. To date I have attended 35 Indy 500's, and probably 100 or so other IndyCar races (CART & IRL).

You'd rather somebody with a Yankee accent who's less qualified?

    No thank you.

Should we have voice stand ins for the drivers and crewmen as well?

Who said anything abut 'Yankee'?! Nice attempt though. Simply an observation. Does the NFL or MLB broadcasts have players using the 'gangsta' and 'street' lingo?! Does the NHL use Canadian or European broadcasters?! Yet they all still provide knowledgeable broadcasts without stand-ins. Or are you suggesting NASCAR is devoid of anyone that doesn't have a southern accent?! Is the sport trying to appeal to America as a whole or just the South?!

I will say this - at least with Larry Mac, "what you see is what you get". All you have to do is go back and watch him being interviewed when he was still a crew chief. He ain't changed a bit. He sounds the same today as he did "back in the day".

Not really an NHL fan. I catch a game here and there though.

If Fox actually has research that says crap like Digger is good for business, and not charity for the producer's cousin who has an animation business in his garage, then the air talent probably matters, too.

Mike Joy is really top of the line. How he puts up with the other two is beyond me because they make for a terrible broadcast.

Overall on all their pre, post and race broadcasts FOX and Speed have too many announcers with very little to contribute, and most do a poor job of communicating and some just can't talk. Plus they have too much programming for that too little talent, it is repetitious and it gets spread way too thin. They also try to be comedians and that mutiplies the lack of talent, they ain't funny.

I watch the races. I don't watch the pre race on Speed or FOX, don't watch the Sunday or Monday night shows, suffer through Wind Tunnel as best I can.

The next thread should be what is up with Rusty Wallace on ESPN? Because he's a train wreck and the only extremely poor broadcaster they have.
