But man this looks really good!
Would either of these scenarios sound promising?:

A non-qualifiers race. All non-qualifiers race on Saturday after qualifying. Points earned based on finishing order. Cash prize to winner.

    or

B Main. Top 24 qualify to main race. Rest to B Main. Top 2 transfer. Rest earn points based upon finish in B Main.

Personally, I favor the former at Indianapolis (On Bump Day) and the latter at the rest of the races.
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

INDYCAR - NOW IZODIER THAN EVER!

How about splitting field of 30 into two groups.....qualifying as normal within each group....two "pole winners" advance to Sunday. ...two heat races on Saturday, long enough to run two full stints....1 set of reds, 1 blacks...top 11 from each advance and are slotted by finishing position similar to Daytona heat races

So how many FT cars are we gonna have next year? I realisticly can see 30 cars! What a year it could be

by my rough count theres potential for 33 cars full time. needless to say the ICONIC program was a complete success in the sense that it completely revitalized participation in the sport

30, not counting 4th Andretti, a 2nd Schmidt, AFS, 2nd Panther, 2nd Conquest, not to mention that new lotus team we don't know about.

I wrote that story on Justin and it’s contingent on Coyne getting Honda (which still hasn’t happened) but let’s examine some facts. Wilson and engineer Bill Pappas (who is also coming back) gave Dale his first and only win in 25 years of trying (and damn near won Mid-Ohio as well) and Z Line became a fan. The deal breaker was supposedly the length of the new contract and that seemed pretty petty considering the newfound success and team attitude. I didn’t blame JWill for leaving and Coyne should be thrilled to get another chance because he’s one of the best road racers in North America.
    Hmm, contingent on Honda?

A few of Paul's tweets later today did not sound as promising:

Read into those as you will. I still think his deal will come through, but for some reason I'm just not sold on it being with Shank.

To be honest, I'm more shocked by the driver lineup than the fact that Dragon will be on the grid. Sure, I had my doubts at times, but I thought for sure that Bourdais was headed to Peugeot's team in Europe and never thought that Legge would get a second chance at North American open-wheel. And on top of these two being in the series next year, they're paired together. How's that gonna work out?

  16. #1546
Slightly off-topic but currently on topic. I don't think the series should send drivers home yet/limit field sizes outside Indy. I say that because the series, which has struggled to get sponsors, cannot afford to send sponsors home. It's like saying "Please pay attention to us!...oh wait, nevermind...go home. You wasted $6Mil." The series is too fragile for that still. But, nothing is signed-sealed-delivered just yet for a lot of teams.

I know Conquest is usually late to the game anyway, but I just don't, as of yet, see those guys showing up. Not with this field shaping up how it is.

PS: If Scheckter and Tracy get full-time rides, this could be one of the best and most exciting/promising fields in Indycar history IMO.

They're going to have to limit cars at Texas. It's not different enough from Vegas to have 34 cars there again.

I'd rather send the sponsor home for a few weekends....I'm of the opinion that this will get sponsors to let someone with knowledge pick the driver! I'm thrilled 30 want to play, but the pit lanes don't have room (Baltimore had Danica and another car pitting on the opposite side of everyone else on pit lane....and that was at 24-25). The headaches of setting a car up to fuel on the other side....got me, but it's something extra to worry about

Doesn't the new car have fuel inlets on both sides?

Also, how about televising (or streaming on ESPN3 in the case of the ABC races) a b-main race. That would provide exposure for all of the cars without expanding the main race grid to absurd levels.

I think the best bet is to set limits for each particular track. Then just let the chips fall where they do.

So where does that leave Ho-Pin Tung? Second SSM? SSM/AFS? Gone?

One would think. But I also think that if something this ot there scenario could happen then we xould expect to see other surprises as well.

Tung doesn't have full season cash, so like Saavedra, Wade Cunningham, Pippa Mann, Martin Plowman, possibly Jay Howard, and I suppose Scheckter, they're kind of out to lunch. I suppose Tung might be found a ride for China, but otherwise, I don't see it. I could see SSM running a 2nd car where they split the duties, but will Honda go for that? Conquest, Bachelart sounded like he wouldn't break up the seat. AFS Racing is in the same boat.

Someone wondered on the Dragon thread why this was happening now, with 2 months plus to go for the season. The reason is simply, the teams need to have a driver and engineering staff assembled by the March testing, but the key is they need an engine contract. The contracts are going fast, and at some point, if we're talking 30 teams, Honda/Chevy/Lotus are not going to be under any obligation to hand more out.

Yes, it will be fun to watch a race team try and race without an engine.

When do we start to hear from folks like Carpenter and Fisher and whoever else, who have had programs together for months now and still aren't one of the 'chosen ones' to be lucky enough to be CHOSEN by our engine manufacturers?

They can't be very happy about that. Just like Vince Granatelli wasn't happy about things like this in the early 90's.

Something like that needs to happen when you can't race all the cars safely at a track, but the issue is it seems like we'll be in a middle ground where either 1) we won't be bumping enough cars to make the B-races interesting or 2) we're taking cars away from the main field just to make the B-race interesting.

If you had 40 cars, you could have 28 in the main feature and then the bottom 20 or 16 are fighting for 8 or 4 spots. If you have "only" 30 cars fighting for 28 spots, basically everyone who doesn't wreck gets in the show and that's not entertaining.

I'd like to see 28 cars in the main field at all times because I think it makes the series look bush league compared to NASCAR's 43 in the eyes of the casual fan if they only have 20-22 cars in the main feature.

In Cavin's Q&A today, he states that Bryan Clauson will attempt to qualify for the Indy 500 and hopefully run the entire 2012 schedule. In addition, Cavin said that Milwaukee is likely to happen this year. Damn, a lot of good news today.

Only if Ford would compete as well, huh? Hopefully that will happen in 2013. I'm sure it has to be terribly frusterating for Sarah and Ed, hopefully it will all work out in the end, which I'm sure it will.
