Davey Allison was driving her back to the pits after getting on his roof on the backstretch during the 500. Earnhardt wasn't the first guy to do that. He (Davey) had a little shoving match with Bodine after the incident in the garage.

A few minutes earlier some guy stole one of the Firebird pace cars and almost made a full lap before the "security" got him. This was a good time in NASCAR.

That was his brother in law I beleive. That was back in the 70s. I wonder if the head got knocked off like on the Mythbusters.

I seem to recall some story about some bonehead getting a street car out onto the track and going at a very high rate of speed then getting killed.

Im positive it was @ Talladega.

Ok, try to guess the Daytona 500 driver. If Mopar doesn't get it he should be ashamed!

    I'll say Buddy Baker.

Yep, that's Baker. He ran the big tracks for the Pettys in 71 and 72, like Pete Hamilton in 70. I don't think he lasted all year in 72.

Correct! Buddy Baker. You guys are good!

The bad thing about these threads is that you realize how long ago you took these shots...

What's worse is being 38, still tinkering with models from 1987 and suddenly without any warning realizing something that almost still seems "current" to you is in an "old school" thread.

Here are some of my ASA shots. In keeping with the NASCAR theme all these driver ran in NASCAR either Full Time or occasionally.

The Blue Bird. Bob Sennaker. Queen City Speedway April 1986.

Mark Martin inside of Butch Miller. Queen City Speedway April 1986.

#36 Kenny Wallace. #45 is Dave Jackson. Dave was a local Hot Shoe who raced every week at Queen City Speedway. April 1986.

Dick Trickle. Queen City Speedway April 1986.

Bob Sennaker pits at IRP. The #28 might be Alan Kulwicki. I see to remember him driving this car. Sept. 1986.

Dick Trickle pits at IRP. Sept 1986.

the pace car incident and the street car incident were two different events. The pace car incident was famously covered live on ESPN. I remember watching that race. The street car incident I believe was years later.

Had the scanner on Davey when that happened. He told Robert Yates, "It ain't hurt bad, I only turned it over once," then added, "Robert, you'd better keep me away from Geoff Bodine when this is over." Actually, he used a couple more adjectives to describe Bodine.

The "kneeling next to the car" at the front stretch of Daytona is a cool shot. They should start that up again.
