Even that Olds 88 is beautiful if for no other reason that I one can ID it as an Olds 88 in a second without having to look at the decals.
BTW, the street Olds 88 and Buick LeSabres with the 3800 V-6 engines were bad fast cars.

No one had to badge the Offy.
How about these big old Olds!

That Cutlass #0 is stunning.
That Cutlass body remains my favorite body style.
I love photos from Daytona made early the first weekend before the contingency decals are applied.
Looks like you and I were on opposite side of the fence in 1983.

Spectacular photos Calhoun.
The driver of the #53 was none other than Tom Sneva. That #57 is in M.C. Anderson Valvoline colors. Obviously they didn't re-paint the car after they bought it. The #73 Pontiac looks nasty. It has "DNQ" written all over it.
Sure were!!! If that's the Clash lineup then that's Cale Yarborough in AJ's car for the Clash and Ricky Rudd in Bud Moore's #15 before he wadded it up coming into the tri-oval. As you can see I was a couple of stalls up pit road from Tim Richmond's pit for the Clash. If that's qualifing I could be anywhere. EDIT. Did it again and got my years screwed up. That's Dale in the 15. Ricky and Dale switched teams in 1984. GOOD GRIEF this getting old SUCKS!

Here's Cale in M.C. Andersons car in 1982.

The photos were taken Saturday during practice.
If you'll notice the #50 on the right side of the third photo, this was the last day for those colors. Overnight, the 50s were peeled off and the #88 and Gatorade decals were applied. That's Geoffrey Bodine in the Cliff Stewart car.
Then of course Sunday it rained and Quals, Clash, and ARCA all happened Monday.
Steve Moore, started 26th and finished 31st in 1st qualifier, listed as out with Engine problems after 23 laps. DNQ for 500.awful looking #73 Pontiac

Thanks for jogging the memory. Now I remember having to call in sick for work because we raced on Monday. This was the year we hit a nasty snow storm in somewhere in Tennesee or southern Kentucky and it took us till Tuesday afternoon to get back to Dayton, OH. I climbed out of the motorhome and went straight to work. I worked 5:00PM TO 2:30AM in those days.
O/T @ Keith -
Since you were associated with ARCA, here's a little tidbit. The driver of our sprint car won the first ARCA (MARC) race ever held (Dayton, OH) and was ARCA (MARC) champion in its second year. His name was Buckie Sager.
I checked Moore's record. Looks like he mostly ran Daytona, Dega, and some of the other big tracks in whatever low buck hand me down the family could afford. I just wonder if they didn't make an effort to spruce up the car for qualifying and the 125, and make it look like a halfway professional effort.

Check out this website. http://wthompson4.sports.officelive....ceresults.aspx Scroll down the page for ARCA / MARC stuff. If you have any pictures or info I'm sure Mickey would appriciate anything you could provide. Spent a LOT of Sundays at Dayton Speedway.
You already did. See post #33.
That was the year he demolished two cars before Tuesday afternoon. They had to scramble to get a third car down for the final practice before the 125s.
And I had forgot the details about the Gatorade car, but that is the aftermath of the quick conversion to Gatorade. Just the logo and numbers - no green stripes at all. Very cool pics.![]()
A couple of other things I noticed about the '83 Daytona photos. Notice in mine there are two #27 Old Milwaukee cars. The Pontiac (that from the other pics they obviously ran in the Clash) and a Monte Carlo over against the wall in my first photo. And from my last photo you see an '83 'Bird for Dale. Then the ones from the Clash he's in the '82 Square Bird model. Lots of experimenting going on during practice Saturday!
