Nice shots from the Mile! That is always a fun place to race. We ran some USAC/ARCA races up there also. Don't think I have any pictures though. I do see it's back on the Indycar Schedule for this year. Just something about that track!

kkoether, if I had a favorite track while I was flagging for ASA, it had to be Milwaukee. The crowd was always great as well as enthusiastic, the racing was fast and close. The superspeedways we ran (Atlanta and Michigan) were good for us, but I always felt that Milwaukee was as big as we should get, and as fast as we should go. They went fast, but still had to handle.
Hi indybigjohn, I remember you from when I was following ASA. Don Wilbur from Dayton, OH drove the car I worked on. We ran some ASA races here and there. Mostly Winchester, Cincinnati, Anderson and Salem. Those were some fun times!
By the way, you posted a picture of Milt Hartlauf. I remember that name. Didn't he have some kind of official capacity with ASA?

Don Wilbur and I are still great friends. I sent him copies of your photos. Milt served as ASA's Director of Competition for the first few years. He's another man I owe a lot to.

That 1984 Pontiac is BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!! I miss those cars so much.
I think that is the only time Dale ever ran that paint scheme and they reversed it for the remainder of the season. Very cool. Where is "The Bandit"!?

I manage to catch up with Don from time to time. Same with Lee Raymond. Life just seems to get away from me these days. I really do miss ASA. Rex Robbins really had a great thing going there. I've always been proud to have been a small part of both ASA and ARCA.

I posted this unspectacular photo from 1985 Speedweeks because it shows just how awful the catch fences were back in the day. Im happy to slam NASCAR these days for lots of things they do, but they sure do catch fences right in 2011. I think thats right at pit in so you know they can and do get up in the fence there. I think it was simply an act of God that no race cars ever got up and over before the newer and taller and better fences went up
Ive been watching Jamie The Jet since the late 70s at Wall Stadium. I try to stop by and just say hi to him whenever the mods are racing down in the South. Just days after the 1991 Indianapolis 500, some guy in a van drove into the Speedway and onto the track. He did a couple joy laps before track security or whoever were dispatched to block off the frontstretch. The kook drove straight into the road block and died of his injuries. Track personnel were unharmed. The guy was a mental patient or something. I'll hafta research this a bit more. It's been nearly 20 years ago!

More great photos. LOVE the shots of the Little Guys. The shot of Booher was from '83. That T-Bird looks like it had some miles on it. Elmo Langley's #64 looks like it was sporting a special paint job. How could anyone not root for the Helen Rae Special?

I recall someone having a car named "Himroy", for simply being so bad in qualifying they ended up scratch on the field
For giggles I'm working on a rendering of what a modern Cup car would look like if it were built the way they were back in the early to mid 80's. I'm polishing up my Adobe Illustrator skills so it is a good exercise.
