Was Sennaker's car modified from something off a dealership's lot? I think I can see where the door hinges/opening was.
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars?

You mean with ACTUAL body parts like we used to use! Where you actually had to cut pieces of sheet metal to fill in headlight, taillight and markerlight holes and everything! Looking forward to seeing your results.

I doubt it. ASA cars of this vintage were sheetmetal kit bodies. As this was the first race of the 1986 ASA season and Bob's car is white instead of the traditional blue I'd say they had just got the car done and didn't have anytime to do the finishing touches. The dark spots you see are most likely pop-rivits holding the door on. Most teams used pop-rivits with with 1/2" to 5/8" heads to attach body panels. Here's another shot of Bob's car.

Im pretty sure ASA teams were allowed to use aluminum & fiberglass body pieces. I dont believe any of those ASA race car bodies ever saw a showroom floor

When did ASA go to the bodies with the seamless doors?

Not sure. I got involved in the late 70's and we always did our doors on our Camero's this way. Here's our new Howe 3rd design we built in 1979. It was completely ASA legal.

Growing up in New Jersey, we never ever saw race cars like this at the NJ tracks. They look like a street stock or hobby stock in 2011, but when I saw pictures of these LMs in Stcok Car magazine I was blown away at these radical looking race cars. These were nothing like the race cars in NJ

Radical! You guys had Modified's! Although I will say John Anderson's Draime Camero was pretty radical looking. Unfortunately I don't have any pictures of that car. I'll see if I can find one online. ASA, and ARTGO rules were very close to most tracks Late Model rules so most guy's Saturday night race car could run ASA. ASA was a fun series to run in. Looking back it was quite a proving and training ground for up and coming talant. We even had a few Indycar drivers show up and run ASA.

Here's a picture I found online of John Anderson's Draime Engineering Camero from Daytona 1979. This was when NASCAR still ran Camero's etc during Speedweeks. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of that division.

IIRC, those were called speedway modifieds.

My concept is the keep the stock roof, nose hood and trunk, along with the stock silhouette, just like the "good old days". Give the car a little rake and a smaller rear spoiler. These sedans present a bit of a challenge with the window opening for driver ingress/egress. I may divert from the stock appearance for that. I'll work on it today and see how it comes out.

ASA cars, at least when I was involved, had to have steel roofs and doors.

I was just givin' you some crap. It didn't bother me. When I saw you pulled it I edited it out of my replay. I don't mind people using my stuff I just like credit for taking the pictures and if they should "god forbid" get sold I certainly want my cut! I got in a hurry and posted a lot of stuff with no watermarks on them. Gotta go through and fix that now.

I'm out of town for work sitting in a motel room with nothing else to do. So I surf the net. I found another discussion board with a LOT of old racing pictures. It was started quite a while back by Indybigjohn. Check it out!

I was at the Square one evening and one B Allison raced a local modified......I thought Miller Beer was on the side of it, or is my memory absolutely shot? Did he make the Square more than once?

He could have raced there in the Miller colors too. but Im positive he raced @ Syracuse too so maybe thats where you saw him in a Miller Modified

Schrader raced at Flemington in a dirt mod once too around 1986 or so. It was the night before a Pocono race cuz we used to pass Flemington on the way to Pocono and the sign ot front still said Schrader was gonna be there the night before

Bobby was quite often known to show up at many local tracks near where NASCAR would be running on Sundays. I think he truely loved to race no matter where. I was involved in ARCA in 83 when Davey ran the full ARCA schedule. Bobby would almost always show up at the track to watch Davey race and sign QUITE a few autographs.

Here is my work in progress

I have to get ready to hit the road next week so this will have to wait. The basic concept is that like the cars of the early 80's, I retained the hood, roof, rear decklid and rear bumper cover. There is a ton more detail I can add; these things are more complicated than an open wheel car from a rendering perspective.

Looks great so far! I gonna go out on a limb here and say Chevy Impala? It actually looks like one. Is anyone from NASCAR watching?

I may tackle one of the other cars instead of going crazy with the detail on this one. I think this make the point sufficiently enough.

I cant really say who is the driver in this pic but I added it to show how small the stands at Dover were back when racing was our little secret"

Back when we would be thrilled to see TV trucks behind the main grandstands Wed ask one of the TV people when it would be seen on TV and be thrilled to hear the NASCAR race we were about to see would be shown "sometime next month"

Edited down to 30 or 60 minutes of course. Which meant youd see the first 10 laps, all the crashes maybe the last pass for the lead and then the last ten laps of the race

And we ate it up only because racing on TV was so friggin' rare
