Cotati, Calif - 1964
Another shot of Dick Bown's Mopar at the end of the main straight. In those days of true stock, this was actually a 4Dr hardtop (probably a wrecking yard retrieval) with the rear doors chained shut.

A better Merc to race with.......that of race winner, Darel Dierenger, in a Stroppe Merc. Deirenger flew in for the race. The Merc was trucked up from the Stroppe shops in Long Beach.

More turn #1 action. The only car I can identify here is one of Coz Concilla's 4 Dr Oldsmobiles which ran the PCLM circuit throughout the mid - late 60s. Some of his drivers were Jerry Oliver and Jim Cook, though I don't know who was driving this one.

More action from the same race.
I don't know who was driving the Mopar. The Ford Galaxie could be that of Ron Hornaday Sr who drove one just like it on the PCLM circuit that year.

4 pics from a 1983 Driver Profile booklet Winston handed out that year at the race tracks.
Talk about a bunch of baby faces!!
I still believe that Kyle Petty #7 is one of the prettiest stock cars of all time

Faster than a bullet from a gun
He is faster than everyone
Quicker than the blinking of an eye
Like a flash you could miss him going by
No one knows quite how he does it but it's true they say
He's the master of going faster. -George Harrison

Ex ARCA, ASA and local bullring crewdog. I remember when racing was really racing and the Talladega Express!!!
Remember they called the #33 Skoal car the Skoal Bandit and the #66 was the Skoal Brother?
I'm trying to track down a picture of Don Williams who was critically injured in the 1979 Sportsman race at Daytona. I'm also looking for a decent picture of Buren Skeen who died in a wreck at Darlington in 1965.

While we're on the subject, here's some photo's of NASCAR's lost legends:
Bobby Myers (died in 1957 in a crash at Darlington)
Buren Skeen (died in 1965 in a crash at Darlington)
(looking for a better picture.. only picture i could find online and had the top of his head cropped out so did a poor job photoshopping the top of his head):
Harold Kite (died in 1965 in a crash at Charlotte)
Don MacTavish (died in 1969 in a crash at Daytona)
Talmadge Prince (died in 1970 in a crash at Daytona)
Friday Hassler (died in 1972 in a crash at Daytona)

This is a video of NASCAR's lost racing legends and a lot of the pictures above were included:
WARNING: Video contains fatal crashes from NASCAR's top 3 divisions.
Ok, not photos, but I think some great home movies...from the 1994 Brickyard 400 weekend. In particular, the qualifying and practice segments show some rare footage of various non-qualifying cars, including various Winston West competitors, and a lot of one-off entries that we never saw again.
Ignorant men marvel at extraordinary things. Intelligent men admire simple things.
Speaking of Tab Prince, I witnessed his fatal crash. Poor Bill Sieffert had nowhere to go...
Bill Sieffert went on to attend many races in later years selling parts and racing things in the pit areas at many sports car events...one of the nicest guys you would ever meet up with.
I remember an article about him in Stock Car Magazine several years after the fact. He was still pretty much a helpless invalid IIRC. Thats pretty harsh, a driveshaft getting in the cockpit
Ive heard of driveshafts coming up thru the floor but never one getting inside the car itself and getting to the drivers head
On a much lighter note, theres no vintage NASCAR stock cars in this photo but I think it still meets the criteria for this thread.
I remember snapping this when we were there for the July Cup race in 1989.
The main entrance is slightly more glitzy now
23 years ago this week now that I think about it.

I recently bought a rather large lot of photos at a local auction and included in the lot were 50 - 60 old photos of NASCAR races and drivers. The majority of the photos were shot by photographer Don Hunter and Bill Niven. I have found quite a bit of information on Don Hunter but I can find NO information on Bill Niven. Has anyone ever heard of Bill Niven and could someone point me to more information about him and his photography?
Thanks
Bates.
Sorry to disappoint, but I didn't know either one. Possibly e-mail or call NASCAR. Their photo department has helped me out a couple of times.
Cover of an old program I had out this weekend
And the starting lineup was still inside the program No I didnt cut the bottom off this scan They really did start just 37 cars that day

Larry Smith.
His name just came up on another thread here on TF this weekend
Run his name thru the search engine and Im sure it will be at the top of the list
Terry LaBonte...and occasionally Bill Elliot...only names in that program from 25 years who are still driving.
Love seeing some of those old names...Jimmy "Smut" Means, modified shoe Doug Heveron...Ron Bouchard as well. Guys i remember from the short tracks who had a shot at the big time.
Jimmy Means still has a race car shop in Western North Carolina. I pass it once or twice a month. Aint much to look at.
Ron Bouchard is still involved in NASCAR modifieds. One of the Flemkes is still racing so hes involved with them. In laws.
Wouldnt be surprised if hes in Charlotte this week when the mods have their 150 lapper on Thursday night
Isnt there a Fedewa racing these days?
I remember watching Jerry Cranmer race every Saturday night back then in New Jersey. He showed up in a Cup car 4 or 5 times around 1986 & 87. I would assume he rented the seat from Hylton whenever he could scrape up enough dough
I dont recognize the names of the drivers who started 36th and 37th at all
Ken Schrader still plays with his dirt cars pretty regular. I saw him finish 2nd in his modified last May
Odd that Mark Martin wasnt around yet.
I think Rick Baldwin was hurt bad not too long after this race qualifying at Michigan
Think it eventually took his life
Heck Ken Schraeder has 10 starts in Cup this year, so I missed him.
This was Mark Martin's in between years. He came to Cup, ran out of money, went back to the ASA and came back full-time in 1988.
Yes, Rick Baldwin crashed at Michigan not long after this and was in a coma for 11 years, dying in 1997.![]()
You are correct, ROY 1972, killed at Talladega 1973......it was a cool looking Mercury he had, Black with a red label.....no surprise there.
