Another Dayton driver that we ran against. He built the chassis under this car. If I remember right he was also a Barber.

The darn car would adjust it's self during the races. Luckily it usually got faster. It ended it's life shortly after this picture was taken. It hit the wall coming out of turn 4 at Shady Bowl.

Jerry, I'm sure you remember, that Seaborn-Breedlove crash resulted in the race being postponed for a week because there wasn't enough time (or material) to repair all the guard rail taken out. Waltrip wasn't going to be able to come back the next week because of a sportsman race commitment elsewhere. However, he was apparently rankled by Milt Hartlauf's comment, "If you can beat this bunch, Waltrip, you ARE the daddy." That was in reference to his unbeaten record at Salem at the time.

Late in the week, he called Steve Stubbs, who was promoting Salem for the Fairgrounds group, and said he'd be there. The rest is history.

It was also the first ASA Circuit of Champions race.

In regard to there not being enough guard rail material for the repairs, my suggestion that we make an unofficial visit to the state highway garage a couple of miles away on Highway 60 was not taken seriously.

I was there that day. A wild one for sure. But I'm chronologically challenged without a book in front of me. But Jerry and John can help, I'm sure.

John Summerville clearing the wall coming out of 2. A tire coming off Gene Payne's car and sailing into the stands. Darrell whips some bad boys as the sun sets. Neal Sceva and Joe Ruttman crash coming to the checkered. What year(s) did those happen?

I miss the Midwest 300 and the old ASA, maybe the best short track/stock car racing roup at the time. Closest thing we have here now is the CRA, which I catch a couple of times a year.

Thanks Jerry! I do check these threads daily but I have not had time to scan much lately. Work has gotten extremely busy the last month. I'm off to Racine, WI in the morning to install a new machine.

Would you believe never? Been to Madison many times but never on July 4. Haven't been able to get into boat racing though my respect for those people is considerable. Usually there's a short track around here that has cars racing.

Danny, I don't remember the years of the Gene Payne or John Sommerville incidents, but I do remember them. I'll never forget Sommerville's flight over the backstretch wall. He went up on a loose wheel or something, because the car just vaulted over the fence, and I can still see that Chevelle in level flight, going over. John said later he just hung on until he got to a tree that was big enough to stop him.

Darrell's win in the fading sunlight was in the first Midwest 300, 1972. One week after that Breedlove-Seaborn accident.

The Sceva-Ruttman last lap fandango happened in 1974.

There was another time that a car went over the turn 4 wall the same way Sommerville had on the backstretch. It was Larry Cope, and he landed on all four wheels. I saw him driving toward the gate in the parking lot, so I didn't go red or yellow. The wall wasn't hurt, he wasn't hurt, so I figured why slow down? Then the gate guard waved to me and I went yellow. They opened the gate to let him back in when we slowed down, and he reentered the race after a stop at his pit.

Rex Robbins asked me why I didn't go red when a car went out of the ballpark, and I told him I could see him out there and knew he was OK. Then I told him I wouldn't have even gone yellow if Cope hadn't pulled up to the gate wanting to come back in.

These incidents are covered in an upcoming book, along with a memory of the regatta at Madison (shameless plug).
