    Historic Open Wheels Photos

The Historic Stock Car Photos thread has been such a success and fun, that I check with our Mod (DannyB) and got a green light to start one for Open Wheels too. Same principle, photos of Sprints, Midgets, Super Modifieds and the like maybe stretch it out to 1990 and older. Let's have some fun!

    Jan Oppermans famous Bogar's 99

"Old Blue" Bob Weikerts 1971 Trevis Craft Sprinter.

DavidM, I'm all for it. If you can race it, I like it. Here's JR at Terre Haute in 1962...

And here's Roy Robbins in "Fido," a champ car cut down to sprint/supermodified size by Harry Hyde. Harry "loaned" the car to Roy after the Louisville area went from supers to late models, and Roy went on a tear. He won the first Knoxville Nationals in this car. No sure who the other car is, but back in those days, 312 was used a lot by Bobby Allison in his own modified days.

The first time I saw Pancho race in person was at Williams Grove in the early 80's. It was a Dirt Champ car race and he was just amazing! Lap after lap he slid the car into turn one and taped the tail on the guardrail and shot down low into turn two. I think he nearly lapped the field.

Art Sugai on the far right with the "Pink Lady", a 1968 Grant King car.
Pavement car, is this the winningest car ever?

Same car, Jerry Sneva 1974 CAMRA Champion

Same car, Kenny Hamilton wining Copper Classic at PIR.

Same car today, with three generations of Hamiltons.

    Great

More time spent on the interet every night

    LOL

Cant wait to see where this one goes
Faster than a bullet from a gun
    He is faster than everyone
Quicker than the blinking of an eye
Like a flash you could miss him going by
No one knows quite how he does it but it's true they say
He's the master of going faster. -George Harrison

This was my best friend in racing at the time, Jim Haynes, photo taken by myself at the old Sunshine Speedway.

This was a 70's vintage Grant King car. Notice the nice upholstry snapped to the bodywork. It was a big deal in our area for someone to have a car from up north, compared to our home-grown creations.

In 1983 Jim was killed during the running of the Copper World Classic.

I dont know who was driving the Mataka 3n1 on this day but they got the # for their car from when they won 3 features in one day many years ago when Mario Andretti was their driver.

    Get it? 3 in 1

going from memory, I think the tracks they won at that day were Hatfield, Nazareth and Flemington

Could be Billy Pauch in the seat

URC Sprints @ US 13 Speedway in Delaware. Summer 1990

My first racing gig. All we worked was the sprint car races. If we werent on the track I had no responsibilities. I took these photos from the top of someones hauler.

I loved those races @ US 13. I had to leave my house around noon on Saturday to hook up with my friends and ride down with them in their sprint car hauler. We were busy until 11 or midnight and when we left they were still running off the lower divisions. We used to stop at the Dennys in front of Dover Downs for a late dinner/early breakfast then finish the ride back to Jersey. By the time we got to their house then I got in my car and got home to my house it was Sunday morning and the sun was up and mom and dad were already getting ready to go to church. I think I was paid $35 a show to work the backstretch

What Id give to be 25 and have no responsibilites again if only for a few weeks!

    Going only from memory...

Gary Gollub was driving the Fenimore 28. 21 years later I think hes still racing sprint cars

14t was driven by Bruce Thompson. Hes totally out of the game now. His son raced in Central PA for a couple years but he got married and started his own family and is also out of the game I believe

Fran Hogue was the driver of the yellow #39. This was the family I rode with on the faraway races Fran retired quite a few years ago and his son Tim still hits many of the URC shows still running the same #. Note the small wings. The URC mandate a 16 sq ft wing back then and ran no nose wing. sometime in the mid 90s they made their rules like everyne elses and went with the 5X5 Wing and nose wing. I think not running the same wing combo as everyone else on the east coast made it a big handicap for the URC drivers when they ran somewhere elese
