You can't make a race car out of a Pig, But you can sure make a damn fast Pig.
If you watch the show Pawn Stars one of Sioux heritage just came up.......but since it wasn't beaded on the back the Pawn Stars got hosed. They have a historical commission expert at their disposal........give a search for a local Native American expert, one in our town is part of the Civil War Museum because of his heritage with relatives fighting in the Civil War.......if all else fails the Smithsonian may be able to direct you in the proper direction.......cool piece, I hope it works out for you better than it did for Rich and Chumlee
I collect NW Native carvings and masks so I looked in a couple of books I have on native art. From a quick read and internet search I am not sure the Ojibwe used buttons as represented on your piece. Looking and comparing photos I found that the Cree examples have the very same buttons and arrangement. I am not seeing that style of buttons on the Ojibwe examples they seem to be either tied from the inside or have two buttons on each side in the front with a tie in between. I am by no means an expert but If I had to bet money I would say it is Cree with a value between $1500 and $3000 depending on the condition. Nice piece for sure, good luck on your search.
I hate it when people compare Senna with god . . . I mean he is okay, but come on he isn't Senna. . .
