That was a genuine stunner which generates a serious question. How can the series go from having five ISC tracks, down to zero this year then for 2012 back to California, talking like Chicagoland is a real possibility, Richmond now in the mix and Phoenix desired if the track had the inclination? That's a dramatic re reversal.
I know some are going to try to make it out that ISC came crawling back but you're going to have to give some evidence why they're so hot to get back races that require spending more on promotion than they did with no real proof they can draw more. Remember Randy wanted to raise the sanctioning fees to bring in more to the series' coffers. I can make a better case for saying that Randy discovered that the crowds that those ISC tracks used to draw were in line with what should have been expected and he has to join the tracks in doing more to add attendance at them. How many others might he be considering sooner than later?
The talk of China and the second Brazil race has cooled down, the one new street race that has been rumored is Houston but I haven't seen Randy quoted on that one. Unless something big changes Milwaukee doesn't look good for coming back, so the series needs to find some ovals. There's a lot that could be happening it seems.

Well, Richmond only went away due to the Suntrust sponsorship going away, right? So, if Richmond has found a new sponsor, then it could make sense. As far as the ISC thing in general, I am guessing that they thought Indycar was bluffing and was slightly shocked when Indycar did not blink and walked away. And also, Indycar is probably looking at the landscape and saying, ok we really do need to be at some ISC tracks for ovals and markets. If the series has picked up some momentum, translating into some sponsorship opportunities (most likely tied to Izod or Verizon somehow) then it makes sense.
There might be interest because of the engine manufacturers. Presumably, Chevy and Honda will be promoting their own participation in the series. ISC is in a position to bag some of that cash, and bootstrap attendance from it.
The fans should be the absolute last people considered on any decision that could effect a participant. Doc Austin

NASCAR's attendance is down and all of the ISC tracks need more dates to keep the groww revenues up. Wall Street has noticed the drop in cash flow.
chevy and gm in general sponsored nascar races in richmond dating back to the early 90's. it would make a little since for them to sponsor the indycar race there. I know some people here in the richmond area thought that the indycar race was taking attendence away from the cup races but, the last 2 years have seen a big drop in cup tickets (with no indycar race here). the track as of last week has a new presedent, maybe he feels that IICS can recoupe profits lost from the cup weekends.

Well I think Randy is a man of his word, and he keeps saying he's serious about a balanced schedule. The other thing is the new chief at RIR is Dennis Bickmeier, who has a history and contacts with people in the IRL/IndyCar realm.

Keep in mind that ISC tried a new paradigm for 2nd dates at its 1-Cup tracks (Nationwide feature race) and that the guinea pig event (Chicagoland) drew a crowd so small it made last year's IICS crowd look like the Indy 500.
Some fans claim one series or another runs "real race cars." What's everybody else running, fake race cars? :confused:

Key words: "If the fans will show up." Let's see, last time we were there:
* The racing, politely, sucked;
* Some of the drivers openly said to the media that it sucked; and
* The announcement of no race the following year was not received positively by... just about anyone.
Not trying to spread D&G, just pointing out this will be a fantastic promotional challenge for Mr. Bernard.
Same here. I went in 2005 and I absolutely *loved* it. Mind you, the fact I saw Sprint Cars for the first time in my life also helped (Brian Tyler was amazing to watch).
The only drawback I had was that I couldn't find my car after the race. I'm 5'5" tall and, as it seemed everybody drove either pickups or SUVs, I couldn't see!
That would be GREAT news!! Indycar needs Richmond and several more tracks just like it!!

100% behind a return to Richmond. It is a great track when the on-air product is not micromanaged, fills a nice geographic hole, and always drew a lot of fans. GREAT choice. Hopefully this time they won't try to poach title sponsorship for Cup.

This is awesome!!!!!! I'm seriously hoping this is for real, because it makes it very possible to see a 20-22 race schedule that is evenly balanced for next year.
I liked Richmond, even when it was in a crashfest in 2008, it still required the balls to drive an IndyCar on such a small track so was good viewing
