The fans were friendly, enjoyed the race, looked/acted normal, and were very attuned to the tech aspects of the cars. On the other hand, many of the Indycar races that we've attended: many of the fans were rude, hurled insults, booed, etc. just because we were following "you-know-who." Our Nascar and F-1 friends have always been left with the impression that Indycar crowds,( in general,) act like fools. Given the fact that you attend different racing venues, what are some of your observations regarding Indycar vs Nascar vs F-1 crowds?
I've only been to a few Brickyard races so I don't speak from much personal experience as far as NASCAR fans go but to me it always seemed the exact opposite. I've never worn a driver shirt so I'm sure some things at Indycar events might not stick with me either but to me, Indy car fans are at a race for a good time and not to be belligerent and denigrate the favorite drivers of other people. I guess one image that will always stick with me was early on in Jimmy Johnson's 1st or 2nd championship run in which during the victory lap after a race, if I remember correctly, there were hundreds of beers being tossed at his car. I never enjoy thinking of soccer hooligans when watching an American sporting event.
@Hurley-I love having threads devoted to positive aspects of a great sport. Thanks!

With all of the "fans" ranting about giving up in Indaycar due to the leaked schedule, I wanted to step into a happy place with others that just enjoy racing...

I think I would fit in at this forum a little better because I just don't take things very seriously.

I'm in. I can be negative when sarcastic, but if it goes fast I like watching and I accept there are two ( or more) sides in every argument.

A positive only forum was a great idea.
Congratulations to RHR, & all the winning drivers & teams in the fantastic 2012 season. Looking forward to 2013!

I've pretty much got the same outlook as Hurley. We've got a very close championship battle, a promotional blitz in Vegas, what's not to like?

I haven't been to any F1 races, but I've been to some group viewings where I didn't know everybody. I definitely get what you mean. There's a little bit more "loyalty test" stuff going on at IndyCar events. I'm way more likely to catch dumb comments about my wife's Danica shirt at an IndyCar race. Of course, I'm more likely to get puked on at a NASCAR race. Though maybe if IndyCar crowds were that big, the yahoo concentration would rise accordingly, and I'd notice it more.

I definitely think a NASCAR crowd is more interested in just enjoying the day they paid good money for, enjoying the tailgating, maybe having a few beers, and watching the race. Some are more into the racing, some are less so. And that's OK. They all ponied up to be there, and those folks just enjoying a day in the sun with the roar of the engine are helping to fund a sport I love dearly, so god bless 'em. I do think it's tougher right now to just go to an IndyCar race, pop up the tent, fire up the grill, and chill.

Though funny enough, that very issue is why street races are such an attractive thing for the series. Because it's so EASY to attend them.

EDIT: This may all be highly variable, though. A Cup race at the Glen likely draws a very different crowd than 'dega does. I might not find the same mellow vibe down there that I do up here, whereas the Barber race may draw an awesome crowd, while I might feel a little out of place at Texas. Hmm. I'll try to pay attention at my next race, and see what I notice.

I love this thread! I watch IndyCars because they go fast, it's exciting, and it's a cool sport.

This is supposed to be fun!

Anyway @Hurley the Sonoma crowd is very chilled out and relaxed. I haven't noticed much loyalty testing among Indy fans, but also, I probably am as clued-in a fan of the modern series as you can be without being an insider.
